Waiting for our first pup!

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and have been creeping around the last few weeks! I thought I would introduce myself and ask a few questions. My boyfriend and I are in the process of adopting a new EM pup! We have placed a deposit on a puppy that is to be due June 17 and are excited about the addition to our family!

A little about our journey....
I did months of searching about the breed and about breeders in our area. We decided on a breeder who we came to like and felt comfortable with. We originally placed a deposit on our pick of a male brindle from the litter. We patiently waited, and she finally contacted us when the puppies were born. Unfortunately, there was only one male brindle in the litter, and he didn't make it. The breeder said he was really small and didn't survive. We were absolutely devastated. The breeder was very sweet and gave us several options including a refund, pick of the next available litter and even the option of a puppy from a champion litter that was planned for later in the summer at a semi-discounted price for our troubles. We chose to take the next available puppy (even though it would not be brindle in color). The next available litter had not been advertised because she only let them try twice and there were only 3 puppies per the ultrasound. Well....you guessed it, that litter didn't pan out either. It was a false pregnancy or the babies were aborted...she wasn't given a good answer by the vet. She had one other girl pregnant at the time, and that's where we're at now. I don't think we can take any more bad news! I contacted the breeder last week to see how the momma was doing, but I still haven't heard back.

Should I be as concerned as I am? I've talked to the breeder several times before now, and she really seems like a genuine person that loves and cares for her dogs as if they were her kids. My biggest concern is that if this doesn't pan out then we have to start our search completely over and begin the process again.

Someone suggested that I repost this in the breeder section! Does this kind of thing happen? I assume it's bad luck but do these things tend to happen from time to time no matter how much you prepare? Any advice or insight is much appreciated :)

Personally I dont accept a.ny deposits until after the litter is wbelped and doing well. There are just too many variables that can happen and i want to make sure I have a pup a avail. Beyond the fact that it is a rare thing for me to have more than one litter a year. and often it is longer. personally i would take the refundand hold your money and get the pup you are dreami.g of not one tbat you settle for becauze your money is tied up there.

Bad luck happens, and it does seem to follow in runs doesn't it, though if he looses a 2nd litter he needs to take a close look at whats going on around him cause two litters lost in close succession may have an external cause.

Otherwise my advice is what Slinger-girl said, you may be best off at this point to take the refund and look elsewhere. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the breeder you chose.

Thank you both for your insight! Deep down, I know you're both right. We're already in for this litter coming up June 17. I'm hopeful the stars align and things turn out well. I keep checking my phone like a crazy person with hopes of good news.

I cannot type worth a darn from my cellphone (above post). Looking forward to hopefully hearing this new litter things will work out. Breeding animals is never a sure thing and Mastiffs are more difficult than your average bear so to speak. If this doesn't work for whatever reason, there are plenty of options out there, it may just take a bit longer.

Bad news again. No puppies with this litter. I've asked for my deposit back. As the saying goes...fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice (or three times)...I know there are a lot of breeders and have viewed the thread for reputable EM breeders. Most are not in my area. Does anyone know of any within driving distance of the lexington area? Also, does anyone have experience shipping a puppy? I cannot imagine doing this, but am worried it may have to be an option. I'll take all the help I can get. We have been undergoing this process for months now without any results and I hate to get I to the same situation again.

If it's any consolation, I researched for close to four years before getting our girl...

Take your time, do not get in a hurry.

I have responded to your PM from yesterday. It looks like many of my comments were made here by others previously.

Additionally, it sounds like the breeder in question probably breeds too often ... which usually means a breeder is breeding lower quality dogs ... to be considered reputable by other reputable breeders.

I did a lot of research before I got my pup. I literally emailed or called every single breeder in my country (I live in Australia so not as many as there would be in the US) but I didn't decide on anyone until I was completely sure. I actually picked my breeder before his bitch was pregnant. I also talked to people who had pups from previous litters and they all had glowing reviews on him :)

I'm sorry this litter didnt work out for you. Keep looking though and I'm sure you will meet your puppy soul mate, it just might take longer than you expected :)
