Viewers, but not Talkers

It kind of amazes me .....there are so many dear doggie owner folks who view posts, but never say anything. Are most folks just non-communicators? Is there some resistance to speaking or writing something?? I am a communicator and it just doesn't make any sense to me when a person "views" but doesn't "say" anything. I have well over 300 "views" of the pictures post, but not nearly that many posts ?? Maybe these dear folks just didn't care for my pictures. Let me know if you have any thoughts about this............003.jpg

Some of the viewers are bots too. I have no doubt that some people probably just scroll through looking for something but I think there is a lot of bot activity as well. It is the nature of the web unfortunately.

I think it‘s a combination of factors (as mentioned).

Generally, in most discussion forums, you can really apply the 80/20 rule. 80% of the content/postings is generated by 20% of the users.

I had no idea....and bots.....now that is really something. Robots ??? Lurkers??? Interesting. Any other thoughts about this ??

I know that I read probably 90% of the posts but might comment only on 10%. Unless I think what I have to say will be helpful I don't see a point in commenting. I still consider myself a relative newbie to dog ownership given there are many situations I have never encountered. I have owned dogs for only 7 years and a mastiff for 6 and except for Kryten's elbow dysplasia both have been "normal" dogs without any serious issues.

I don‘t think this forum is any different from others in terms of user behavior. In most cases, the registration process is quick and easy, which is why many people sign up who might never use their account. Apart from that, this forum is almost like a database of knowledge. New or potential Mastiff owners might only use it for that purpose, rather than to engage in conversations. You will always find a relatively small group of users that is very active, while the majority of all users is not active at all. That‘s kind of what I meant by the 80/20 rule earlier. Certainly, the more activitiy among the users, the more content, which can be good or bad. At this point, most of the topics are very meaningful and helpful, which could change if there was too much irelevant interaction.

I guess I have the question, "WHY??" I do realize that this is the case, Unit, but why is that?? I just don't get it.

Different personalities. I don't understand why someone would want to comment on every post they read. Nothing wrong with it but I just don't get why.

Well, Smokeycat, over 300 nice folks looked at my "a few pictures" posting, but only 16, including me, replied. But you are right...there are posts I know nothing about and I just don't want to say anything. Thanks !!

It‘s definitely an interesting question. Here is my list of "potential" reasons:

- Different personalities (e.g. introvert vs. extrovert)
- Technical difficulties
- Insecurity (e.g. drafting postings that could technically be seenby the entire world)
- Lack of time
- Inability to contribute due to lack of knowledge
- Language barriers
- Registrations based on a google search for a particular topic - no need to browse the forum after finding the answer
- Avoidance of potential conflicts (e.g. opposing viewpoints)
- Data privacy concerns

There probably is an additional 100 reasons. I think we sometimes confuse silence with ignorance. I‘m sure that most users are very appreciative of the forum‘s content althought they might never want to post.

I personally enjoy your posts a lot @Pastor Dave even though I might only respond to 50% of them or so :) Glad to have you as a member of the forum!

We've lost quite a few of our high performance members, if you go to the membership list, you will see the highest posters, but most of them are gone. Two have lost their dogs, one is believed to have past away, another had life-threatening illness and a large number have just melted away. Oh, some times they drop in out of the blue, but most of our high posters have ceased to participate.

And Pastor Dave, I enjoy your pictures, I'm sorry I haven't posted my appreciation. I guess, in my case, I'm a little jealous...I take terrible photos and haven't many to share. Mea Culpa.

No need to be jealous, my friend, Bailey's Mom. I have many years of getting paid for pictures, mostly wedding pics, and I have had tons of practice being, as a pro, "fairly good all the time" as opposed to amateur "fairly good some of the time." That is not pride of life; just the way it goes. I am so sorry that so many of your "high posters" have disappeared for one reason or another. Have a great day, Bailey's Mom !!!

I'm so glad you popped on here, Me-2. It is so good to hear from you. Tell us about your dog (doggies). I have two at present, and I am for sure a dog-person. I really like dogs. I am not much of a cat guy....they make my eyes water.
