*Urgent* Help needed!!

New here but needing advice, excuse my grammar as I'm trying to get a four month old to sleep while caring for a sick puppy. :(

Xena is a 7 week old EM we adopted from the shelter a week ago. This morning upon waking she seemed lethargic, didn't rush out of her crate like normal, and has been napping since then. When I fed her she took a few bites and refused anything else, and threw up about five minutes later. I managed to get her to drink some broth and eat a bit of boiled chicken, but she threw that up five minutes later as well. I have been checking her stools and they are solid/brown no blood and not runny or extra stinky. She was vaccinated her first round a week ago.

Ideas? Help? Do I keep trying to feed her? Wait and see? Or run to the vet?

For a pup that young please call your vet for advice immediately! Could be any number of things that could be get serious very quickly!

Being that young I agree go to the vet now! 50% chance there is nothing wrong but if it is the other 50%, a puppy declines very quickly. IMO, it is not worth the gamble.

So I called the vet, she had me take Xena's temp and said that since it was normal and she doesn't have diarrhea she wants me to have her fast for six hours, then offer white rice and call her back if she throws that up. She said based off of what I described it sounds like she just has an upset tummy based on something she ate, maybe a leaf or stick or something? Idk, I might call a different vet for a second opinion.

Go with your gut feeling and call another vet, I would.

Sound and typical advise from your vet. Just keep a close eye on her. Of course if anything changes I would be off to the vet. I would also check her temp about an hour before your vet closes. That way if she is running a temp you can get her in before they close.

You are doing a good job. Keep us posted.

Call another vet. Also if she gets the runs and it smells real foul or has an odd dark or greenish color. Take her to a vet not the first one you called. That combined with what you described earlier is a sure sign of parvo.

Just curious. How often does a pup have parvo absent fever, diarrhea, and stench?

I've only seen one dog that had parvo and that is when I worked at a vet clinic years ago. I don't have experience with it other than info on the internet and what the vet I worked for over 25 years ago said to look for.

Not sure on that. I know of one, my old Doberman mix had parvo and never presented any sign. Years later we found out he was carrying it and had to put him through a 4 shot series to get it out of his system. He never showed any signs at all. But every young unprotected dog (4) he came in contact with became infected in under a week.

Just wanted to update, no more vomiting. She has been keeping down chicken broth and water, I've been offering it to her every 30 minutes. Other than a short amount of time that she woke up to go outside, she is still sleeping the day away.

Whew. sounds like she may be on the mend.

I was going to chime in that dehydration is a big problem with many illnesses, so if you can get broth and water in, you're doing great!
Hope it's just a passing issue and she feels better soon!

Another not so great update...

Just took her outside to potty and her stools are loose. She is keeping broth down still and her gums are still pink but we're heading in to the vet anyways as soon as my husband can get home to watch the girls. (He should be here in 30 minutes)

Be praying for us! I'm not sure what more to do for her. If it is parvo, I'm not sure we can afford the thousands of dollars it would be to treat her with such a low survival rate. :/

My stomach is in knots thinking that this sweet little girl could be so sick.

I'm hoping it's not parvo. But if it is hopefully starting treatment early will help her, don't think the survival rate is that low, have seen many dogs make it through it at work. Keep us posted!

Don't let yourself get worked up. It is good that you are taking her to the vet. IF and that is a big if, it is parvo. It sounds like you have caught it early. The problem usually comes from dehydration and it sounds like you have been able to keep her hydrated. Hopefully, it will not be a bad strain.

Can you or your husband give sub q fluids? If so that will keep the cost way down. Ask the vet to show you how.

We're back from the vet, and ***it's not parvo*** thank goodness! I can give sub q fluids if needed, however.

She checked out fine but had a ton of roundworms, which the vet thinks are the problem. However, to cover our basis we have anti nausea meds, antibiotics, dewormer, and one other thing I've forgotten at the moment...

He wants me to continue giving her fluids via syringe and let him know if she's not eating tomorrow. Hopefully the dewormer will clear things up and she'll be back to her playful self soon.

Fantastic! All puppies have worms. She might be a sluggish for a couple of days but no worse for the wear.
