Ugh, Thor stinks might need more food suggestions

Well yes, pups need more, but that doesn't explain your original statement.

For an adult dog between 71 to 90lbs THK says 2.5 to 3 cups dry. Rehydrated thats 2.5 to 3lbs. For comparison TOTW High Praire kibble for a dog 80 to 100 lbs they recommend 3.75 to 4.3 cups, or For the same formula in canned form up to 6 cans (at 13.2 ounces each thats 4.95lbs).

Now yes, growing puppies and highly active dogs need more, but thats a determination the owner has to make, and then do the comparison based on their dog's intake.

For comparison, I was feeding TOTW when we first got Apollo on his breeders recommendation. At the time I switched he was eating about 4cups and 1can a day. A 30 lb bag lasted barely 4weeks and cost $47, plus $59 in canned food for the same time period. Thats $105 for a months worth of food, approx 53lbs if my math is good.

One 10lb box of THK's Embark lasted me 3 weeks and cost me $80 at my local store.

Round it out to the 12 week mark and TOTW was costing me $315, THK $320. I call that compareable.

And no, I did not just feed him that amount because it said too. If he finished the bowl and looked for more he got more. He self regulates VERY well even as a pup.

Ok i have an 85 lbs cane corso puppy she now eats 4.5 cups acana pacifica which costs 63$ for 29 lbs bag, on the honest kitchen site states for 71-99 lbs puppy or highly active ( my dog is a puppy and highly active ) feed 4.5 -5.5 cups dry so i would feed 5 cups so 10Lbs of thehonest kitchen costs 79$ x 3 to get the same amount as acana (30 lbs) thats 237$ compared to 63$. So thats what im saying that for me is a big difference in the amount of money.

Ok, I had to go dig out a box, a cup of Embark weighs 2.8 ounces, when I was figuring things when I was deciding to switch one cup of TOTW kibble weighed 4.5 ounces.

You cannot compare foods just by the number of cups. Weight matters.

Now will you stop trying to compare apples and oranges??

Could it be stress? With the move and all.

It could be, I mean we've been here for almost two months now. However he hasn't given me any indicators of stress. He's doing so much better with the floors.

The shedding and dull coat are new issues right? Not since you started feeding TOTW?

I'm curious because I switched Branka to TOTW (from Nature's Domain) and like 5 days later she started shedding. It's been about a month now and her coat looks dull... I thought it had to do with blowing the coat and maybe even going into heat because she went into heat the day after I noticed the shedding... As far as the gas, it's a million times better with TOTW.

If it's the food I don't know what I'll do, I don't think I can afford anything better :( Maybe I'll just start adding some fish oil and give it a little more time.

Smart_Family... Should I add Fish oil? Coconut oil? Olive oil? a combintation of them? Rotate them? Any of them? lol

I've been feed TOTW for about 2 years now with no issues until now. Maybe change in formula they have been using? I'm still reasearching foods but I might try the Acana.

Well I guess I need to check my scale, but I still think you'recomparing it wrong, and my experience feeding it agrees. The ten pound box feeds as 40 lbs like they say it does and I don't know how else to explain it to you.

Look, I fed THK exclusively from the time Apollo was 5months to the age of 11months when I finally convinced my husband to do true raw. He'd have starved if it was only 10 lbs spread out over those three weeks a box lasted, and he didn't. He is infact average sized for his litter.

THK is a great food. I've used it sporadically over the years. I wouldn't be able to afford to feed a dog this size THK exclusively. A ten lb box holds 40 cups of food. At 5 cups a day, that's only 8 days worth of food. Luckily, it's better to feed it with raw and that's what I've done in the past. You can also trade in your box tops for free food.

With Mason, I used Love and Embark, but he had awful gas and poops on both. I've been feeding Acana and raw as of late, but his skin isn't looking as good as it was on raw alone. I'm going to try Natre's Variety Instinct next. I've heard good things regarding allergy/sensitive dogs and these formulas.

Yeah i've noticed the same with Hera skin and coat that since she's been on Acana is not that good so i've been adding some olive oil. She doesnt have any gas though. I will research natures variety instinct though to see whats that abt.
BullyBug do you know which formula is ok for growing puppies?

The duck and turkey one.

thanks smart :) .Only one formula... The best thing is to have at least 2 varieties so they don't get bored with the same all the time, i think.

Yea unfortunately which is why I like Earthborn since theres 3 formulas that you can rotate between.

The duck and turkey one.

The Rabbit and the Limited Ingredient Turkey are also fine. I'm not sure about the Beef as the values are not on the website.

@ angelbears - I'm hoping to be able to move to half commercial & half raw because all raw is a little hard to afford and store right now. Dry/canned will also be easier to travel with when we start showing. If I can't get him back to his prior condition this way, I'll have to try to find a way to make raw work.

Thank you bullyBug. I'm always curious as to why, since I feed raw. Always worried that I may be missing something.
