Time spent on new commands

Hey everyone

I've been working with Jenny, our 11 week old EM. She is really picking up things well... Lay, Sit, Up, Come.... shes getting them all down pretty good. She takes some coaxing but Im surprised how fast she picks things up !

How long should I be waiting in between starting new commands ??? or how long should I be working on the ones I have been teaching her ?

I dont want her to over load and get confused !

Thanks

just be consistant on whatever you teach her.. don't say sit then come then lay down.. i think doing to many in a sequence will confuse or make her bored and she may just ignore you...

It is a judgement call, partly, as to when to move on. If she is performing the command consistently for you without treats, then you can probably move on to teaching something else. But don't be too shocked if in a few months, she starts to "regress". Sometimes dogs will catch on quick and then it seems like they forget everything. I think it is developmental stage issue, I think they start to test their boundaries to see if they are really required to perform and/or obey. It's important to not give in and to remain consistent when that starts happening.

Confuse them how?
I do at least 15 minutes a day at sit, down, stand, stay and focused heel every day, in french and english.
I switch up the orders, sit-stand-down-sit-down-stand-stay-down-stay-stand-sit...etc I move farther and farther away from her as I give the commands. I also will but down masking tape and she has to do the commands in the box I create. Oh and I forgot pretty, for her show stack.
We have been "playing" this game since she was 10 weeks and she is 18 weeks today and LOVES it.
She works for beef heart that I cook for her, and we have a bast.
It is a fun game, but you want all training to be fun so that they want to perform for you. I would get her good with the basic commands before you add more.
When she goes from down to stand her whole body shoots off the ground, as she jumps into the asked position.
Most importantly, IMO, is to have fun doing it.

She is starting to really be a hard listener. I ask her to come and she just ignores me.... I call her name, she ignores me. She does this when there is the slightest bit of distraction..... when its just me and her, she is great ! She listens no problem. I guess I just gotta stick to it. She must be going through a stage

Make it the best thing in the world when she listens!

Mine does that to me now too. She got a perfect score in her STAR puppy class 2 months ago. Now it's down to completely ignoring everything we say. She's turned into a stubborn knucklehead, that's for sure. And if I put food in my hand, she gets so dang excited that she can't focus on what I'm saying. She just freaks out and barks at me and throws her front paws into the air trying everything to please me (but not listening to what I'm saying!). We're in a very frustrating phase right now indeed.

yup, thats exactly it.... I will try to skip a few treats.... as in, do some commands and just give a "good girl"... so that she doesnt just associate everything with getting a treat !
Where is the best place to train a dog ? inside ? ourside ? closed room ? around people ???

---^--- IMO all of the above.
I start inside with basics, then move outside and around more distractions. That is the tough one, getting them to listen while there is ssssooooo much else they could be doing :D

She does have a fave toy (rubber ball with feet and pointy ears that sounds like a dying goat when squeaked) that I can get her to focus intently on when I squeak it in my hand. So if I can just get her to focus on me and what I'm saying after I squeak it, I'll reward her with throwing the ball. Definitely a work in progress though. With the weimaraner in her, she got so dang excited last night when I picked up the ball, that she just kept jumping 4 ft straight into the air right by my side the whole time when I was walking across the driveway. I had to tell my 4 yr old to stay up on the steps by the house so she didn't get bowled over or landed on. Sheesh...
