I have a bandog but its not that mix ... a bandog is a dog mixed for a purpose and there parents and there parents before them clear off the edge of the pedigree...that is a hybrid mutt no better then a cockapoo or a doodle another way to get money from people for another flavor of the week random mix....

THE BANDOG

The term Bandog (also known as Bandogge) originated around 1250-1300 in Middle England, referring to a mastiff type dog that was bound by a chain during the daytime and was released at night to guard against intruders. In 1576 Johannes Caius published a book called Of English Dogs in which he described Bandog as a vast, stubborn, ugly, eager dog of heavy body.

History of the bandog

Bandogs were bred with a functional purpose, as were all working breeds, and for the Bandog this purpose revolved around guarding and protecting.

The Bandogs of old were strictly working dogs, often of various crosses and various sizes. Usually these dogs were coarse-haired hunters, fighters and property protectors without a strictly set type, developed from eastern shepherds and mastiffs crossed with western Bullenbeissers and hounds, with a few local bloodlines eventually being established as specific types in some regions, such as Britain, Spain, Germany, Poland and elsewhere in Europe. One of the most famous Bandog programs in England led to the establishment of a recognized breed, the Bullmastiff.

Modern breed description

A notable developer of working class Bandogs is Joe Lucero. Lucero refers to his dogs as American Bandogge Mastiff. There are other bandog strains in existence under different names, but the Lucero lines are the most famous celebrated for their stable temperaments and outstanding working qualities. Many people believe these dogs to be the perfect protection and working class guard dogs.

Many programs have used American Pit Bull Terrier (American Staffordshire Terrier) and Neapolitan Mastiff crosses, as has been the case with the Lucero program. A few programs have also used other bully type breeds as well as other mastiff type breeds. Regardless however of which program a breeder selected, if they were breeding dogs true to guarding purposes it has been essential to select dogs suitable for such work. Dogs were bred from strains that have temperament, phenotype, to do home guardian or personal protection. The Bandog is a rugged dog, heavily boned and muscled, intimidating when seen and is ferocious when provoked. The Bandog, any variety, is strictly a working breed and should be a result of serious and dedicated planning, starting from careful selection of parent breeds and more importantly, appropriate representatives of those breeds, with the health and temperament testing being on the top of the list of priorities, while the uniformity in appearance is the last of the breeders' concerns. The intention in each case is to combine the courage and tenacity of an American Pit Bull Terrier with the large size and guarding instinct of a Mastiff.
Broad skull, strong muzzle that is medium to long muzzle depending on the strain, wide shoulder, powerful chest, great agility, intelligence and very well controlled dog.

Future

The hope is that the breeding of these dogs will finally be perfected; however, the Bandog is being bred by many

We just pulled a pup from the county animal services for bullmastiff rescue yesterday. He's not a purebred bullmastiff, but I wonder if he's this cross breed. He was 1 of 4 dogs in the house, that turned out to be a meth lab. He has beautiful ears, nice wrinkles, but his nose is too long & he's on the small side. And his eyes just aren't bullmastiff eyes, but I can't pin down what other breed he looks like. I wonder if he was sold to the rotten pieces of shit that owned him for protection. He was really snarky & very leary of all people; tried to bite one of the caretakers. Once we pulled him, & he settled down on the ride to his foster's, he actually wagged his tail & took some food from us.

I wish I could; it was a very quick last minute thing & I didn't think to grab my camera. He's already at the foster's, who said she'll send pics in a couple of weeks when he's on the mend. He has some kind of skin thing going on; kind of like Ally when we got her; no fur along his back & face. Also when we picked him up from the vet's (he had to be neutered; animal control rule), his nose & face was caked with green snot. Great. I'll put up some pics when she sends them to us. Promise.

Just got word that "Josiah" (don't blame me; I didn't pick his name) is suffering from a severe case of pneumonia, guessing from chemicals he inhaled in his Hell hole meth lab former home. He has a scrip for Batril, an extremely potent but very expensive anitbiotic. They'll evalute his lungs again after the infection clears up, but the vet is pretty sure he'll be ok. Margo, his foster mom, took another pic of him. Looks like he's a red brindle under all that demodex. The rescue got more money than they needed for Ally's latest bout at the vet's, so instead of taking the money for her daily meds (insulin, thyroid) we told the rescue to put it towards Josiah's care. Anyways, if you look at the first pics, he doesn't really have a bullmastiff nose. And he has some white toes. His eyes don't look like bm eyes to me, either. Here's a pic of the little bit of red fur that he has:

Wow, poor guy! He's going to be quite the looker when he heals up though.
I think I can see some BM in his head shape. Ears too. Wrinkles.

When animal control called us, they said they had a bm/boxer mix. I don't see one little thing that says boxer in that boy. He has huge feet; too many wrinkles; & his nose is def. not boxer. That's why I thought maybe he was the bm/pit mix this thread was talking about. I can't imagine his scum owners could afford a purebred bm, even from a byb.

I see Boxer, but not really much pit. Too many wrinkles and his muzzle isn't as smooshed as some boxers, but pretty typical of what comes into rescue. Poorly bred dogs from poorly bred parents. That red is common in brindles and the ear set is very boxer, as are the eyes - or I think they will be when that demodex clears up. He really appeals to me. I wish I were closer and had the room.
