Super Itchy Dogue

My Dogue Harley has been so itchy lately. You can't even pet her without her scratching or biting herself!
She's starting to get bumps and scabs on her from all the itching.
We have her on the kirklands salmon and sweet potato kibble and she's been doing perfect on it! Solid bowel movements me no sickness at all.
Previously we have tried lamb and chicken based kibble and that resulted in sickness and loose bowels.
I've cut out all treats and all kinds of the chewing bones.
She gets baths at least once a week.
Does anyone else have a itchy Dogue?!
And any suggestions on what could be causing this itch?!

Why are you bathing her so often? This could be the cause for her itchiness, especially in the cold weather when their skin tends to become quite dry. Brush her every day for a few minutes to stimulate the oil production and clean her with a wet cloth if she is dirthy. If her skin is very dry use olive, coconut, salmon or krill oil in her food and also massage a bit of coconut or argan oil into her skin. Talk to your vet and ask him to give you something to help with the itchiness untill you get it under control. And stop bathing her unless is absolutelly necessary!

Our DDB Wilson had lovely coat and skin but after we had to take him off a raw diet and onto kibble then some of his coat went wiry and his skin was drier. We add salmon oil to his food once a day and it makes a huge difference. Regarding baths, once a week might be too much for your DDB. We bath Wilson once a month (although I'm sure some people think that's far too often too) mainly because he is the sort of dog that likes to romp in wet grass, mud and puddles and he quickly becomes a dirty and smelly pup.

If you have to bathe that often (not recommended), I'd look into a leave-in conditioner formulated for dogs to help with keeping the skin moisturized.

We also load up on fish (salmon) oil when itchies show up around here... that seems to help Denna.

The only reason I bathe her once is a week is because she gets so dirty when she's outside! She will come inside with mud all over her. I have been using a oatmeal shampoo for her that's suppose to keep her from getting dry skin but I will hold off as long as I can from giving her a bath. Thank you!

Stay away from oatmeal shampoos when you're dealing with allergies or itchies.

Have you tried coconut oil? It works wonders for skin.

Itchy dogue here too, I've had to ask tons of questions about it. Vet told us to zymox shampoo for her, helps with Itchy bumpies...anti bacterial and anti fungal. Can just use on problem areas. Is getting better, though. Good luck

It is topical, you can get it at any grocery/health food store.

This may be a stupid question but I'd the coconut oil a supplement or topical?
Supplementing works as well it just takes longer. I found that using it as a topical treatment increased licking either by the treated animal or by another because they wanted the oil. All of mine get coconut oil the dogs in their food the cats get it topically on their legs because they will clean it off and ingest it that way.

I don't have personal experience with fish oil but I do know coconut oil works wonders. They may lick at it but weather they eat it or use it for topical it works. So it's a win win, unless there are sores and liking is preventing the sores from healing I would put it in their food.

I don't know if it's better or not but I do know that both dogs like it better. Kryten even likes it enough that he will watch me put a pill into a blob of oil and still willingly takes and swallows it.

Coconut and Fish oil are chemically very different... so one might work for one dog/ailment, and the other for someone else... Fish oil (high Omega-3's) helped Denna's itchies go away. I didn't see any help from coconut oil (lauric acid & Vit E)... but we might not have been consistent with it long enough.

I get the buckets from Costco... I find it tasty, myself. :)
I also use it for skin lotion, instead of the hydrocarbon based varieties.

Ya, coconut oil has been awesome by me too...but the super itchy terrier has not responded to it or fish oil, internal or external. I am beginning to fear he is completely chronic, poor guy.
