Split nail - what to expect?

well I was hoping my next post would be an update with some cute photos to share (which I do have) but unfortunately we have an injury in the house.

Diesel has broke a nail. It is split straight down the middle well past the quick. So it looks like we get to find our new vet tomorrow.

Believe it or not this is the first broken nail we have ever delt with. I know the hanging portion will need to be removed and i assume his foot will need to be wrapped and since the quick is involved he may need sedation.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Any words of wisdom as to what i can expect and ways to make this easier on my poor boy.

Here is one of the photos I was going to share before the injury. I just got home yesterday from my work trip and the pups both got new collars.

I think my Diesel looks extra adorable in his.

I don’t have any experience or advice. That sounds so painful, poor boy. But I just wanted to say that is a great photo, he is soo handsome!

That is a gorgeous picture! He looks very dapper in his new collar. As for the nail, mine have never had any split before. I know other owners that did have to have the nail clipped, cauterized, and watched for infection. Others just had it clipped. You're in Portland, OR, is that right? I did a search for professionals that are Fear Free certified in that area. There's quite a list. I think you'd like the fear free approach. I would, however, suggest that you call and verify that they actually practice fear free techniques if it's something you're interested in for your dogs.

Thanks for the link! I used it and found one we went to this morning. They were great and even had a 50% off deal for new customers. No cauterizing was needed. They trimmed the nail off and all the other nails too and said to just not let him lick or mess with it too much, to check it regularly and make sure there isn't any swelling etc. So we are back home and he is laying at my feet. Keeping it clean is going to be the real challenge because his quick is completely exposed right now.

Diesel has a great smile... He must be looking at his Mommy!

He was but I have to admit I cheated. I took this right when I got home from my week long trip. They were both so happy to see me that it was nothing but wagging tails and smiles. And of course lots of crazy running around in excitement.

Thanks Marke and Glen!!! I would not have thought to use toothache liquid for the pain.
