Something's wrong with Kryten

Kryten is sick. This morning he refused to eat and then started to throw up. I've called the e-vet and after talking to her we decided that it doesn't sound like an emergency so we are trying an antacid (Zantac) to see if it can calm the acid in his stomach and stop the nausea. Neither bloat or an obstruction seem to be an immediate concern given he has had normal bowel movements this morning. I'm going to give the medicine a chance to work before deciding if he needs a er visit.

We just got back from the e-vet. He had a drink of water about 1/2 hour after the first post and immediately threw up. That scared me into thinking it might be bloat even though he didn't have other symptoms. Thankfully that wasn't the problem. We're not sure what exactly is the problem. It is likely either a possible obstruction or a severe GI upset. The vet couldn't feel anything but due to his size it wasn't possible to know if she felt everything. He was given injections of a painkiller, antacid and a anti-nausea medication. If he stops throwing up chances are very good that he has some sort of GI upset instead of a blockage. Unless something bad happens tonight he will have a follow up with his regular vet tomorrow which may include X-rays.

I think the poor boy has been through enough and the 'sickness fairies' can leave him alone now!

Oh yeah. He was severely dehydrated too. I took him with me to pick up his pain meds on Wednesday and he weighed 82.2kg. Today he weighed 80.0kg. He received 1L of sub-Q fluids. The only place he has loose skin is around his neck so he now has 6 lumps of various sizes.

On a more positive note the vet was very impressed with how calm and obliging he was, once she realized it was normal behavior and not a sign that he was very sick. Another vet conquered by the little monster.

I think the meds must be working. The poor guy has finally fallen asleep.

Hope he feels better soon! You can freeze pedialyte (for kids) and let him lick the cubes, its an electrolyte base that will help him with dehydration. It is in the drug store or walmart for a few dollars. I've used it quite a few times.

I was told that if he wanted to eat this evening that I could feed but to break his meal into 3 parts. (Apparently she normally tells people to start with 1tablespoon but didn't think that would work with a boy his size). I decided to go with bland instead of kibble and so far he is doing well. He just had the second helping. (Jiggers is pouting because Kryten is getting the good stuff and he isn't. )

He's definitely doing better this morning. He is far more interactive than yesterday and was asking for real food after he finished his bland breakfast. He hasn't pooped yet but gas is definitely moving through his system.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for Kryten and for you... You both have had more than your fair share of the med needs :)

We have poop....ok diarrhea but it still shows that things are moving. His recheck is in a little over an hour so hopefully we get good news then.
