  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

skinny neo pup :(

the ribs are visible...she's brindle so it's quite deceiving, but I can see the ribs and the hips bones. I can see them when she walks, as well. I can't see them on Sophia. However, I'll ask for vet's opinion next week when we have the next check up... she might be going through an accelerated growth stage and that's it. Yes, she had her heart checked and she's dewormed.

Looks fine to me, she is a pretty pup!

I'd only get worried if hip bones were showing, or if she was acting lethargic or something.

I think she's skinny. I can't even see a puppy tummy in that pic where she's laying down.

Nope, still does not look skinny and I still can't even see ribs. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Skinny is good, anyway.

Yeah, but barely. Perhaps the standard is different for Neos compared to breeds I've owned for decades, but I like to see (or at least feel) ribs, even in a puppy.

All of the pictures are adorable, but if you want an accurate assessment of her body condition you need to get a picture (or a few) of her from the side standing. The body changes a good bit between laying down and standing making certain features more pronounced.

She looks like a beautiful healthy baby to me. My lil Roxy is much skinnier but they are just growing so much. I think its just hard for them to retain weight during growth spurts.

yep, those are ribs... She's hard to get "in action" but i'll try a standing side pic later today.

My trick for catching little ones still for a second is to put peanut butter on the edge of something that is face height. It normally distracts them long enough to snap a picture or two.

Thats a good idea! Almost all my pics of Roxy are of her sleeping or laying down cause she's so active. They always come out blurry from the movement.

Luna looks a little skinny to me but it also looks like you can see can see the last ribs on Sophia too. Brindles can be horrible for tying to get pictures to show what can be seen in real life. Pictures of Kryten never show how skinny he is even when I could put my fingers between the vertebrae on his back.
One thing I learnt from Jiggers is that sometimes a food just doesn't work for a dog. The only sign I had that the PC food didn't work for Jiggers was that I just couldn't keep weight on him. If the vet says nothing is medically wrong but she is underweight it might be the wrong food for her.

Thanks - the peanut will be probably gone before i grab the phone but i'll have my daughter trying to keep her focused. :)
I'll try video - the movement shows them (the ribs) better. Her coat color hides them in photos. Luna clearly has a slender frame, Sophia looks more robust and "healthy" to me (but she's not as tall and long as her sis).

I went through the exact same issue with both of mine. I really wanted to feed Earthborn. I love the food, love the company, and my dogs enjoyed it as well, but it just could not keep weight on them. I would increase the amount in an attempt to get them to fill out a little and end up with runny poos from digestive overload.

I ended up having to switch to Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete (my dogs are neither extreme nor atheltic) but it is a nutrient dense formula and they finally got to a good management weight. Not to mention because it was so dense, I was able to feed them less and maintain a good body condition.

+ Caution: I absolutely would not recommend Extreme Athlete for a pup under 1 year old. The calcium/phos balance is high and the fat is quite high as well. It is a good maintenance formula for adult dogs that have trouble keeping weight on.

I try to be careful with calcium for girls. And I had Jack on "working dog" food for few weeks and it was like he was eating kerosene...

A pic from the top too, I think. Try to get one from the top, side, and maybe at an angle from the front to get a pic of the hips. I think she looks a little thin in the pics you've posted, but not terribly so. Not enough that I'd worry. I get what you're saying about the brindle being deceiving. I have a skinny brindle boxer. People think I'm fostering him and he came from people that "starved" him, because those are the dogs I used to foster. Lol. He's been mine since he was 7 weeks old. He eats more than my EM but is all ribs, back bone, and hips. He looks terrible. But he's healthy. The vet and I celebrate when he manages to tip the scale at 53lbs instead of his usual 49. I can't take a picture to really show how thin he is because the brindle disguises it. It took me many different angles and types of lighting to even get this good of a shot - and he's much more hip-boney and back-boney than this. Just to give you an idea. And please appreciate the Ella mastiff hairs clinging to his brindle body. Her hair is insidious.
