NO! Compared to highend kibble; it can be even cheaper. The must have item for feeding raw is a freezer.

Ditto!!!

When we had 5 dogs I was feeding TOTW kibble plus wet - I figured I was spending approx. $250/month PLUS supplements for joints & the junk treats I was buying for all of them etc....so figure $300 - $320 in total for all that.

I figured up the cost for raw & it came in right at $198/month thats it - b/c I stopped the supplements for joints ... still do fish oil however. Some months I spend less between sales, free meat via Craigslist AND b/c my dogs self regulate & dont always eat every night or eat everything I give them.

AND with them on raw all of their teeth have gotten better looking especially our 13 yr old senior - all the green gunk is gone from his teeth, sad he had it sees how we did dentals every 2 yrs....SO Im saving X amount of money with him not needing anymore dentals. He's getting around better, bad hips/legs .....getting old sucks.

PS we have 6 dogs now & Im still feeding for that price or just under again via the sales, etc...

Smelling of corn chips for me is the dead give away for yeast. Almost everyone that I have talked to, said that their vet didn't think it was yeast either but turns out that in most cases it was.

I agree with Angelbears via the yeast - just did a google search & everything comes up & says "yeast".

If you stick with kibble make sure its grain, soy, wheat & corn free ... I saw what you have him on but not heard of it so not sure if it is free of these or not.

From what Im reading on 'home remedies' to clear it up is that the spores will be "killed" and symptoms can go away but it'll always be there just dormant. A lot of site say to avoid sugar in all forms as yeast thrives off of it - another reason raw diet would be good - its all raw meat, organ, bones - no veggies = starches = sugar. And so on ... Im seeing where feeding plain (unflavoried/fruit less) yogart can help clear it up.

He's probably too young for it but sounds like a possible thyroid issue? Though I don't know if that would cause the oder... But the skin issue sounds JUST like my Dobe's before I had the vet check his thyroid. The vet didn't check it until I asked him too because Lucius wasn't over weight and had been acting normal, but it was his thyroid and it was way off, I think he was 3 when he started having problems though...

Earthborn is a REALLY high end grain free kibble, no grain of any kind, no chicken.

We had a male with absolutely terrible skin, turns out he must have been allergic to the processed chicken in his food because after even 2 weeks on RAW he was a completely different dog. There are lots of people to help you out if you want to give it a try and there are some great places you can order complete diets from if it is easier than trying to find butchers and stuff in your area to get you the stuff you need.

I would have a spare deep freezer if you are going to do it full scale but maybe if you try a month or 2 and see if there is any improvement and if their is then consider the freezer. For my puppy it is a little more expensive at the moment because he is a puppy and I have to adjust for his weight gains as they happen but once he is mature we will be comparable if not a little less. I looked at it this way though... even if it is cheaper the amount I was spending at the vet was double what I would have spent on the food for a month.

Titan, a French Mastiff, always had skin issues as you described with your baby. He was allergy tested and he was allergic to everything but chicken. We tried high end dry foods but allergies continued. He used to get bad yeast infections in his ears. I started him on the raw diet 2 months ago and what an improvement. He still has a little flaking and rash but I've been told and I have read many articles about raw diet and allergies and it can take up to 6 months for the skin to clear up completely. Personally, raw diet was the best thing I did for Titan.

Also, when battling skin and yeast issues don't cheat on the raw diet. We did. I could just choke myself. We would still give him a bite or two off our plates and kept smoked turkey and cheese in his diet. Delayed his recovery by months. Cane's problems are alot more than yeast but at least that part is getting much better.
