Shredding bed

Hello Everyone,

I have a 7 month old Cane Corso pup, I have been crate training the puppy since he first came home. I’m fortunate that I work not to far away from my home so I’ve been able to come home on my lunch break and let him out as a puppy. Now that he’s bigger he’s crated for the day. He has been fine up until recently. Now he will shred his bed. He’ll be fine for a bit then one day he’ll randomly decide to destroy his bedding. When this happens I’ve been taking the bed privilege away. If I put a towel in with him he will destroy that as well. Is the answer to not put a anything in his crate with him? I’ve looked into stronger “crew proof” beds but where I am in Canada a lot of the manufactures don’t ship up here. Does anyone have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Yes, my answer would be nothing in the crate. It's not worth the risk of a blockage from ingesting fabric and stuffing. My EM was able to have a bed from day one. My boxers usually don't get them until they turn three - when their brains are delivered. Lol. Privileges abused are privileges lost.

My girl was tearing up her blanket so we took it away and she got nothing. Then we bought a crate pad from k9ballistics.com. It chew and scratch resistant. It’s really easy to clean and they have a great warranty. It’s worked for us, but like Boxergirl said, maybe it’s not worth risking it if you think he will try to chew it up. 9939D401-8F3C-45EF-A0B9-4EF9BF59C856.png

Thank you very much, I ironically found ballisticK9 and had reached out to them. However they are the company that didn’t ship to Canada. They offer a “ship to the border” option but I’m not anywhere even close a US border. I’m going to leave him in his crate without a bed for now, exactly as you have mentioned the risks are to high. I really appreciate all your guys input and help thank you.

6CE6B007-16E3-423A-BE2C-C95AF751AB39.jpeg We have used the crate mats from Kong, which aren‘t that soft, but unlikely to be destroyed. Our EM didn‘t even try, but he would destroy any soft bed. Unfortunately, they don‘t seem to produce them for the largest crates, so we are also looking into the one that Jarena posted.

I'm feeling really lucky that Ella was never a chewer. I just use two old couch cushions and sewed some covers for them. I like that the foam is very supportive and that they were free.

Mine gets nothing in the crate except a frozen Kong with peanut butter. Same thing, destroys everything since 10 weeks to 11 months. Destroyed not only her bed but the 2 poodle beds, several blankets, towels, the cage itself and anything around. Crate with nothing is the answer.

I can tell you what I do , the beds my dogs have seem pretty tough for them to get at to destroy .... I make a 2x4 wood frame the size of the kennel , needs to be pretty tight , so they can't chew the corners , mine are only tight side to side , they're tight enough and heavy enough they can't flip them up to get at the bottom , the only corner they can get is the front one , the other three sides are tight against the walls ...... I cover it with carpet so the carpet is tight and attached on the underside so they can't get to it , I put something like gym mat , neoprene rubber mats , those gym mat squares that lock together are pretty soft , I put them under the carpet inside the 2x4 frame ......if he's really nuts and manages to dig through the carpet , use canvas ....... give him a cow femur to chew on when he's in there , once they give up you got it made and I think it helps teach them not to destroy stuff ........

Denna turned into a shredder about that age, too... which was when I started traveling for business again, so she was home alone and bored. We got her the megacrate, I think it's 54" on the long side, wire crate. She would shred any bed or pillow that we let her have in there.

My hubby brought home a "guaranteed indestructible" bed one day (when I was gone)... and he returned it as shreds in a garbage bag to the pet shop the very next day... they didn't say a word, and quietly processed the refund. LOL.
After that, she either got nothing, or just a fleece blanket. For some reason, blankets were ok - she could dig them around, I guess, versus pulling them into shreds.

We also found that her coolaroo cot-style bed fit in her megacrate - and that lasted a long time... like 3 or 4 months before she finally dug a hold in the canvas (I think her kong rolled under it, so she was determined to get through the canvas). That's easy to replace, though ($25). She also finally graduated from the crate soon after, and has been an angel in the house ever since. She had to be confined from about 8 -14 months due to shredding issues.

I’ve been feeding him Acana large breed puppy. I don’t feed him anything crazy he is lean. I don’t over feed him cause I don’t want him to become to heavy and do damage to his joints at such a young age. His dad is 145lbs. My boy does do allot of swimming tho. He is pretty muscly.
