  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Rhaegar, Rhaegar, and more Rhaeger!

Thanks Mag-Pie and TWW. I have loved raising Rhaegar from a little baby so much, it has been amazing and so much fun. Kerry and I have already decided to get him a little CC brother or sister, but it won't be for another year and a half or so after I graduate next May. Most of my class will be successful in having jobs lined up by the time we graduate, but I'm not even sure what state I'll want to practice in. Kerry is an RN, so he shouldn't have trouble finding work no matter where we go. And then we'll have to purchase a house at the same time because there is pretty much no landlord on the planet that would allow us to rent with a pit bull, a Dane mix, and two cane corsos. So there's no way we can introduce a new puppy until we get through all of that turmoil. I'm having to make myself wait awhile before starting to talk to any breeders...it's sooo hard to resist the temptation!

He's a great looking dog! And someone recently told me "mastiffs are like potato chips, you can't have just one!" LOL

You might be right about that, lol. I also think about getting another CC, and as much as I would love to raise one from a puppy I know there is so many dogs out there in need of rescue (and understanding) that I will probably end up getting another one of those, when the time is right. :)

I come from a background in rescue, so before we purchased Rhaegar from his breeder, we applied to Cane Corso Rescue first to foster, then to adopt. We never heard back, not a word. I really tried to not take that personally, but it*s really hard to not be a little offended. Don*t get me wrong, I*m not bad mouthing them, they are a great very dedicated group who works EXTREMELY hard for the breed. I was later told that we had just slipped through the cracks. That is understandable, I know they are inundated every day with applications and pleas for help, but we sent multiple applications, as well as multiple inquiries about our applications, so I don*t know. I could see a few things possibly causing concern. We don*t own our house, we rent, but I attached a letter of permission from our landlord. My boyfriend and I aren*t married yet, but we have lived together for five years. We are young, and yes, I am a student, but Kerry is an RN with a good job. I have years of experience with the breed, and both my dad and my former stepmother currently have dogs adopted from CCR. Are we rich? Far from it, but I have access to the very best vet care at extremely discounted prices, and we have made provisions for any emergencies or expensive procedures (a savings account and a dedicated credit card for vet care). My pets have never gone without. Hopefully it comes through on here how much I love them and how hard I try to do the very best for them. Honestly I*m not even really sure what I could do to try to be a better dog owner. So I*ll admit it was partially out of frustration with rescues (we were turned down by another rescue) that we chose to get Rhaegar from a breeder (and I did get some crap from my family about that decision). I didn*t expect to love raising him this much, and we really want to do that again. I definitely know that I*ll get back into rescue eventually, but I*m pretty sure we want still to get another CC pup from a breeder.

So Rhaegar was supposed to be an adult rescue, lol, but now I wouldn*t trade him for anything!

There is no doubt that you love all your pets, and it shows that they are living wonderful happy and healthy life with you. It's too bad that the CC Rescue somehow overlooked you, because IMO any CC would be very lucky to end up with you. And I totally understand your frustration with the other rescues, I can even relate since in most cases I would be turned down too, because of the simple fact that I do not plan on getting Luther fixed which I think automatically makes me unfit in their eyes. Which is too bad, but craigslist is full of dogs that need to be rehomed, sadly, so one way or another, there is no shortage of CC's for me to rescue in the future... Either way, you've done an amazing job with raising and training Rhaegar, and I really enjoy seeing posts and updates from you.

In defense of Cane Corso Rescue, they are a fabulous rescue and they have their hands full since they rescue on a national level. I tell people who apply for adoption to follow up with them every 3-4 days to stay in their face. It is a volunteer/foster based rescue as most rescues are and they are overwhelmed with rescuing, finding foster homes, adoptions and arranging transport for rescues and adoptions.

I wasn't putting down the rescue. I know how incredibly busy they are, and the ladies who run the rescue are fabulous. Every year, they're having to work even harder as the breed becomes more popular. I don't even know how it's possible for Liz to juggle everything that she does. But I do know how they are, so I definitely stayed in their face about my applications. There's no way they could miss them. My stepmother fosters for them, but she was on a hiatus at the time I applied. Since she's started back (and after we already got Rhaegar), she spoke to Liz, who never saw my application. She said the person who screens applications must have been busy. That's why I said I was told that we just slipped through the cracks. I was just making the point that we made a genuine effort to adopt, and that there was a certain level of frustration before we decided to go the breeder route.

I can't believe how time flies. Rhaegar is now 10 and 1/2 months old and was 96 pounds when we weighed him today. It feels like we picked him up just the other day. He is such a good boy, and I'm always pleasantly surprised by how well he listens.

My big grown up boy (although he'll always be a baby to me):

I didn't realize how tall Rhaegar was getting until I saw him doing this at the back door today:

Then I got him to put his paws on my shoulders, and we're face to face! But he'll always be my baby no matter how grown up he gets. Some more recent pics:

Here he is cleaning up a parmesan cheese rind, and then not wanting me to share it with his sister, lol.

I haven't bombarded you guys with pics on this thread in a while, so here they are! Rhaegar just turned 16 months old a couple days ago.

And my other children:

Still has to share his bed with his sister, but they barely fit together anymore:

Oh, and I forgot to include this one......such an innocent little face. This is from last night when Rhaegar ate a 12 inch nylon strap off of a tug toy and I was waiting for the hydrogen peroxide to kick in and for him to vomit. Well that didn't work, so we wound up having to go to the emergency clinic at midnight. He got a injection of apomorphine and thankfully threw up the entire strap. And who can stay mad at that face?
