Rescue requirements experience?

My experience with rescues was weird too. I wanted at some point to see a puppy that was on Facebook that morning - I called and they said that pup was not available but there are others. I said that's fine - can I see them? Nope, I needed a property inspection and all the approvals first lol! So I couldn't even go there and see what dogs they had and if they really had any pups (since the photo was different than the available dogs) BEFORE I had all approvals and visits at home. That's how I decided to get puppy Jack from the breeder and gave up adoption idea.

I got my EM from Mastiff Rescue of Florida and they are a great organization. They did a background, vet check, and in-person home check. They asked questions that made me feel a bit defensive but I gave my reasons for not vaccinating every year and showed proof that my existing dog had been vaccinated in the past. Then when it came down to it, they had a "special needs" dog who is allergic to vaccines and had tummy issues so they actually wanted an adopter for this dog who used a natural vet and would home cook its food. Since I already did that with my existing dog, they matched me up with the special needs dog. He has been an awesome dog and I haven't had any issues with his health. In fact, I don't think his tummy troubles were from his diet, I think it was the stress from his previous owners divorce as he is a very sensitive soul. Anywho, I highly recommend Mastiff Rescue of Florida.

That is a great story and I'm glad you two were matched!

I hope I don't jinx anything but I think I've found a rescue I can work with and have high hopes that this little girl comes home with me next week. I did the application, vet references and sent video of my home and property where the dogs hang out. It is all pending a meet and greet Saturday. I was totally honest with them about my male pomeranian being an idiot with my last EM but he has been sweet with Emma so I"m hoping he has outgrown his attitude problems. Saturday I'll take him and Emma to the rescue to meet Angelina. If that goes well I'll be bringing her home next week when I get back from my business trip!

Thanks, we go for our meet and greet tomorrow. I'm super excited even though I'll have to wait a few more days to bring her home. I've always wanted to rescue seniors,I hope she is up to handling my current pack.

I think if you stay flexible and not say "I'd never put spot-on flea poison on my dog!"... but say... "if you require it, I'll consider it", and/or add that you "take measures to make sure fleas & tics are taken care of"... and then do what you think is best for the dog in question, anyway... you'll get further.

We don't do regular flea & tic meds, but I do conform to the requirements where Denna boards. She took Bravecto for the first time ever a few weeks ago. I minimize exposure where I can. We're cold enough that heartworm is not a problem, so she doesn't get that med (I did have Denna tested last month, just to be sure, and she's clean).

Our current house has never had a flea problem. We brought some home from a relative's house one holiday many years ago (pre-Denna), and did dose everybody with spot-on treatments, did lots of laundry and powered the bedding... once.

When we travel, I've started using essential oil "spot-on" flea repellents. I don't think they work to stop an infestation, but so far, we still haven't had a problem. Some of the ones based on cedar oil say they kill fleas, not just repel, too.

We have adopted two dogs via rescue. We must have told a good story (and/or they recognized us as serious dog-lovers), because we didn't have any troubles.

Let us know how it goes - and bring PICTURES! :)
I follow a senior rescue, "Old Dog Haven"... and am contemplating providing foster care... just haven't got up the gumption yet (and business travel keeps making me think twice about how/if I could make it work).

IMG_1449.JPG IMG_1437.JPG IMG_1447.JPG She is awesome! Head and tail held high but zero aggression. The boy child I was worried about was a complete gentleman. Gotcha day won't be till the 29th due to business travel but she will be ours!

This time next week she will hopefully be snuggled up next to me on the couch. Going to be a long week. :)

Congratulations!!!! She is beautiful and Emma looks like she is doing wonderfully too! Sounds like you are well on your way to the "herd" of mastiffs you want.

Congrats... Wish I had the same experience but I'm not lucky when it comes to rescue. Seems like I'm not qualified for any dog at all. Despite my experience with the breed I want to rescue I still get denied due to asinine reasons such as too much foot traffic because of the proximity of my house to the beach and so on and so forth.

It has taken years for me to find the right rescue and the right dog. Depending on the breed you are looking for it may never work. If it doesn't work find a reputable breeder and get your pup!
