Red Eyes

Hello! Hope someone can help. When I went home today at lunch to let Stush out to go potty his right 3rd eyelid was red and puffy. His left one is usually a little red, but never swollen. It comes and goes. Any idea what this could be. He does eat alot of fruit, spefically strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. Today he only ate his food and about 15 blueberries this morning, oh and half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Also, he will be 6 months old on the 1st of February. What should be a good weight. The vet assistant seems to think he is small. He is 65 pounds.

Yes, it looks very similar to that, except it was more across the bottom of his eye. When I got home from work last night, it looked as if nothing had ever happened. He looked normal. He still has a vet appointment at 6:00 tonight to have it looked at. I worry more about my little man more than I worry about my family!!! How sad....he is my world. The vet assistant said that most large breed dogs are 70 - 80% grown by 6 months. I find that hard to believe, so she said he may only be 80 pounds full grown. I find that impossible. He is very tall.

If it looks similar to that he might have cherry eye which isn't unusual in a mastiff of any type. It will pop back in at times and you will think everything is fine but then it will pop back out. If one eye does it usually the second one will start. This is 100% but in most cases I believe it does.

I think that most of the big growth as fair as height and weight is finished by then end of the first year or shortly after. After that it tends to be the filling in and muscle development and such they go through...maturing their look. I wouldn't worry too much about him not reaching his potential...some are just slower and if he is tall then he probably appears very lean. Give him some time and as he starts to fill in you will see the change in him.

You aren't alone with worrying about your dogs as much as a family member or more. After all the dogs can't talk but the human can :)

Thanks for the info. We took him to the vet last night. They checked for glaucoma, they put in some kind of drops and used a black light, they checked his eye pressure and found nothing. They did give us a cream similar to polysporin to use for 10 days. The redness has decreased. We are having him neutered on the 4th so want him to be in top condition. While he was there we weighted him and he is actually 72.6 pounds. He really is a picky eater. He grazes, he does not inhale his food. However, he eats peanut butter and jelly sandich for breakfast along with 1/2 can of wet food mixed with 2 cups of dry food, some strawberries and blue berries. He loves his fruit!!! Thanks again for the info and encouragement.

He has a lot of growing left. Lol, height more or less is usually around 1, but Mastiffs continue to grow and fill out until they are 3 when mature.
Just a question, why are you getting him neutered so young? He is 6 months?
