Raw Egg???

We started giving our english mastiff a raw egg a day. It has been a week since we started and he had gained 10 lbs this last week. We started this after we took him to the vet and he weighed 56lbs at about 6 months old. I was thinking that he was a little under weight. My better half was reading online about a raw egg a day. Im assuming that this is safe for Diesel. So my question is, if he has gained 10lbs in the last week what else could I give him raw that is good for him and how much should I give him? As well as is there any side effects from feeding him raw food??

A raw egg a day is a little much. They are usually used a couple times a week. You have to remember that mastiffs need to grow slowly and ten pounds in a week is a lot. They continue to grow until 2 and even 3 years. There's nothing wrong with raw but you really shouldn't combine raw and kibble in the same meal. And if you're going to feed more than the occasional raw treat you need to make sure you're including bones and organs so that the dog's nutritional needs are met.

He is eatting the egg at night. We leave food out for him so he can get it when he wants it. I dont like having to wait to eat at a certain time so I dont expect him to either. So now my question is should he be eatting just raw or just kibble or should we continue to give him the egg just not everyday like we have been.

Are you leaving out what the bag of food recommends or are you filling it up when the bowl is empty? You really shouldn't be free feeding a mastiff puppy. If they eat too much ( and given the opportunity to they will) they are put at risk for all kinds of growth disorders, some of which can't be reversed and they have a greater chance of bloat. Like I said before he really shouldn't be given a raw egg every day. Three times a week is enough and if you truly want to feed raw the correct way you can feed kibble in the am and raw at night or vice versa or transition completely to raw. There are several threads here about raw feeding and it's definitely something you need to research before you start.

We have been free feeding him. He more nibbles here and there. We dont keep his food in the same room that we are always in. He doesnt eat a lot at all it is a medium size pan and it last about 3-4 days. Thanks for the information about the threads that are posted here. I deff. will be researching before I start to feed raw for sure. I dont want anything to happen to my giant friend lol.

I really would recommend against free feeding and also leaving food out for 3-4 days. Kibble can get rancid and stale by being left out for longer than a meal and then he's either not going to want to eat or hell get sick from doing so. I hope you're able to find the information you're looking for!

Dogs like routine. You may want to eat whenever, but it's good to have the dogs set up so they know what to expect. Dogs are happier and more relaxed if they know what's what.

I agree with Smart Family, 10 lbs in a week is a lot. Like stated you dont want a large/giant breed pup to grow too fast - can put undue stress on the developing joints & such and can cause uneven growth spurts. Again like what was stated you want a nice slow even growth over time. I would not leave food down 24/7 aside from the pup eating too much & you having no clue exactly how much he/she is eating, to me Id think it would get stale. I agree with Kelly, like kids - dogs thrive on routine. Id get your pup on a feeding schedule. I feed my 9 week old Cane Corso pup raw, twice a day & thats it. If you want to switch to raw there are lots of threads with info here & several of us who can help out w/ questions & such. Good Luck!!

Watch to much protein in large breed puppies it can cause major problems and free feeding should be illegal LOL

You can feed raw eggs to your dog, nothing will come of it, in an all raw diet you can feed a couple a day to a large dog.

I always recommend not to feed both kibble and raw, even in separate meals. It is very hard to get the right nutrition that way. And if you feed both DO NOT feed raw bones. Bone combined with the calcium in kibble will be way to much for a growing dog, well over 10%.

So if im feeding my dogs kibble in the am and raw for dinner is it ok to give them chicken necks for dessert? they are full grown, in senior stage. Also ok to give them a raw egg every day? Tess just got lip mussel prescribed to her and shes not liking it so if can mix it in with a raw egg im thinking she may eat it that way.

Kelly, if you're feeding kibble in the am & 'raw' at night ... what is the 'raw'? I would say to not feed too much bone (chicken necks) if you're feeding kibble it can/will block your dogs bowels up.

Not sure what lip mussel is but 1 egg a day is a bit much. You could try putting it in a egg a couple times a week & in some yogurt the other days.

The raw is a block of ground up meat & veggies etc from the butcher. I do trust this butcher, they are known throughout the lower mainland to have an excellent reputation, and when the homeopathic vet recommended their raw I went with it.

Lip mussel is an all natural pain reliever I believe. Tess is on that, plus recovery, plus rimadyl as needed for bad knee joints. I can hold off on the bones then until I phase out the kibble altogether.

Gotcha!! Just remember with raw, bone = firmer stool, meat & organ = looser stools, depending on the organ being fed the dogs poop can be dark in color. And kibble = firmer stools.

Sorry to hear about her bad knees, hope the stuff you're giving helps.

^ I wish I knew that when I started feeing raw would have been so helpful, everyone kept throwing percentages at me, LOL. Too much for a n00b at that time.

so Im feeding greyhounds along with mine. They are eating kibble but are very finnicky. With 4 large dogs Im not going to stand around and wait for them to decide to eat. I found that when I put raw egg in it they love it. When I ran out of the eggs I still had those cartons of egg whites. would I still have to be as cautious not to give as much of the egg whites?
