Ok. Thanks for the clairification. I'd love to see some Neos with the temp you describe. The Neos I've met are prob some of the closer you'll find to the original. See my post Mastini Mayhem.

While I love to "window shop" & just look at Neos, I would never have one. However, the more & more I read about CCs, the more interested I get & the more I want one. I just don't know if I'm capable of handling one as opposed to an EM.

That is kinda why I started this thread. I know without a doubt there is no Fila in my future but I just didn't know where the other dogs fell in the spectrum. I LOVE the looks of the Corso but I also know I'm not cut out to own one of those either. Looks like I might be ok with a bully. :)

Thanks Ruth, I remember seeing a photo of a dog with ridiculously long fangs. WTF Couldn't remember the name though. Seems like in Russia they like HARD dogs.

The fangs are likely the wolf that was supposedly crossed in to create the current version of the breed.

I just don't see the point in teeth like that, to me it doesn't even look "right" in the dog's mouth. It looks like they would break very easily.

The only actual neos I have seen were some hard dogs. Guard dogs all the way and very formidable. But from what I have been reading that is not the case with most of them.

NEWF – Newfoundland
EM- english mastiff
BULL- bull mastiff (I would have expected Bullmastiffs to be “harder”?)
GP- great Pyr
LEON- leonburger
GD-great Dane
DDB-dogue de bordouex
CC-cane corso
AD-Dogo Argentino
ROTT- rotweiler (I would have moved to softer than AD, maybe even softer than DDB...?)
ABD- american bull dog (I'd move with ROTT, a little softer)
TOSA- tosa inu
PRESA
NEO
CAO- caucasian asian ovcharka
FILA

The two real surprises from the list -for me- are that everyone thinks the Bullmastiff is such a "softie", and that the Rott and ABT are such "hardies".

I haven't met a Bullmastiff, but "rumor has it" they're meanies. :)
And all the rotties and ABT's I know are sweeties, not necessarily "soft", but easy to train and very open to being friendly to strange people.

Our GD mix was a total pushover softy, but I can see with EM, LEON and GP as the competition, the GD would maybe be the "harder" dog, relatively.

In my personal experience, BM's are more reserved with their temps. When they aren't "on", they are lovable teddy bears. When they are "on", you don't want to be there. They seem to be able to pick up on people intentions or body language pretty good too.
And if I have a problem with someone, they have a problem with them too.

I don't have much or any experience with many of those dogs in the list. But I would def. put EM's first, and from everything I've read it would seem Filas should be last or at least tie with the CAO.

The reason CC are much easier then a Neo is bc they are a hybrid of them. So in this case there is other breeds mixed in. Softened the Neo. No disrespect CC owners or Neo owners :)

Not taking any disrespect but there are CC that are still closer to the Old Neo then modern Neo's themselves.

Again I am not talking the majority of CC out there, but dogs in rural Italy that the people have been breeding for generations.
I know from talking to many ppl that met dogs like Tuco (brindle above) he was strictly a hands off dog.
These dogs IMO, although are registered CC, are closer to what the Mastino Italiano was then many modern Neo's (I too am not trying to offend any Neo folks)

i believe there was another thread going about how the neos had been bred in the last 30 or so years for the wrinkles with no attempt to try to preserve the working form of the dog or attitude. it was obvious in the discussion that all in the thread felt that the newer neo was a wrinkly EM and that the current Corso was more to the original Neo. the thread had alot of great pics that were really quite eye opening. This has of course led me to look for a working Neo. And then it led to Mastini Mayhem. This lady's dogs are much closer to Old school neos.

Masteneo, Do you have a Neo from Jessica? Her dogs are pretty impressive. Another Mastino breeder in Serbia is also still breeding Old working Neos, his are by far the best Mastino I've ever seen. www.mastinoepir.com His Mastino IMO are the perfect version of the true Mastino Napeletano.

The Leo, wouldn't that be possibly higher than the EM on the list? No experience myself, but as far as handling it seems it would be soft compared to some of the others.

Yeah I made it out there, met a few of her dogs and her pups. Didn't manage to take any good picture. But I posted a thread about it. Aragon is definitely very impressive. He's 7 years old and and still pretty full of energy. Also he weighs in at 130 - 140 lbs. I was very impressed to say the least. Edit: I just noticed I've made it to 100 posts, and I'm now a senior member! Now I feel important!LOL :D that made my night LOL.
