Question Regarding Breeder Contracts

Thanks for sharing your experience with Boxers. I‘ve done some additional (random) search, which was not breed specific. Based on that, I‘ve found equal prices for males and females, "cheaper" males or females respectively, so it‘s probably to the breeder‘s discretion, rather than a common theme among all. I‘m wondering if they base this decision on factors, such as popularity, supply/demand etc. I guess there are many people who have a very strict preference when it comes to selecting the right gender. Many of them are probably not even aware of the actual differentiators, and the fact that it is more specific to the individual dog, rather than gender. Again, just wondering. I‘m probably over-interpreting this.

It's been quite a few years since I've been looking for a breeder, so I do appreciate hearing the answers to these questions. Things change all the time and all of the breeders I used to deal with have retired. I'll be looking again in the next few years, so the discussion of contracts is interesting to me.

That's a really good question. I did notice w breeding our mini schnauzer, people sought out females. No breeding rights, just pets, but the females are more desired. And cost more. As to where it seems males are highly sought w large breeds. I'm guessing cause males are larger. And people assume a male will be more protective. Also, a lot of people don't want to deal w a large female going into heat.

That‘s some good thoughts. The size aspect probably does play a role with giant breed. Many people who get a giant dog might as well go for the largest possible (not saying this is right). I personally didn‘t want to deal with females going into heat (regardless of the breed). Apart from that, I have always liked males better, but not for any particular reason.

I think it depends on the actual breeder. As we generally only sell pets that are to be spayed/neutered then we don't price genders different. Some price females higher as they tend to be the backbone of a program and while you can't stud them out to bunch of waiting females you can however breed them every cycles and sell pups for a premium price (this is not something I advise or would consider a responsible breeder doing but it does happen.)
