Puppy- severe infection

Last night my pup was constantly puking with severe dhearea. It was so bad, that he was walking and pooing at the same time. He puked all his food out exactly the way he had eaten it. He was puking constantly with 30 second intervals. Watching him was heart breaking to say the least. It was around 3 in the morning when I realized that something was really wrong, within minutes he had become very dehydrated, constant drooling from the nose and mouth, he could barely stand. I called the hospital and they called my dogs vet who was on call; we did some x-rays and found that his intestines are full with fluids because of a infection. Forcefully holding him down flipping him over wasn't pleasant.....HE is on I.V right now cause he can't eat solid food. They took some blood and sent it to the lab to see if its pancreatitis or parvo. My dog has had all his shots but apparently you can still contract parvo even with the shot, there is a slight chance. I can't imagine what he must be going through being only 5 months old getting touched and grabbed by strangers, in a place unknown all alone, sitting in a closed tight cell with a cone wrapped around your neck, nobody from his pack around...all alone. He's been protected all his life by me And my dog bowzer who's very possessive of him. To go through this.... I have a feeling his OJERIZA is going to go to a whole new level once he gets through this.

Parvo usually has a very distinctive smell. But its totally worth having them check for it. And yes, the vaccine signifigantly reduces the risk of it, but its not 100%, and even if the pup catches it the vaccine often makes it easier for the pup to fight it.

Crossing fingers that he gets better quick!

I've never personally dealt with parvo, but by all accounts parvo poop is one of the most nasty smelling things ever. Doing a quick google search I did find reference to a "metalic smell around the mouth" but none of them were what I'd consider to be reliable sites.

Very sorry to hear this. I hope he pulls thru. No chance he got into any alchohol or cleaning chemicals?

Have you received results back from the tests? I know when my parents dog was tested for parvo, they did a snap test & we had the results back within 10 minutes. She did come up positive & was in the hosp for 10 days. Her vomit & diarrhea was the most awful stuff I've ever smelt. I can't remember if it had a metallic smell to it. All in all hope your pup is ok & recovers quickly.

From my experiance with parvo the stool is dark and greenish with black in it and smells of copper, iron and sewage. I really hope your dogs is ok and gets through this.

So sorry to hear about your pup :( To me, what you described does sound like it could be parvo. I have seen and smelled my fair share at work. It is a smell you will never forget. Although some dogs don't present with the bloody diarrhea like others. I hope it's not the case for your pup. Hope he pulls through whatever it is quickly.

My dogs stool is black on a regular basis since i feed him raw beef. Yesterday after going 4 times or so clear liquid was coming out with some darkish matter in the middle. I was with him till 10 in the morning and he seemed very lethargic had to physically touch him for him to notice that i was there at which point he started wagging his tail. I just got back from checking up on him again and he seemed better more aware probably cause the meds were wearing off; but he had this little cough here and there. Thankfully he seems a little better now, but I'm still waiting for the blood work to come back.

My doctor told me it takes a day or so for the blood work to comeback. If only i was able to get the results that quickly the wait is the hardest part, I'd like to get on with the treatment as soon as possible rather than helplessly monitoring him.

friend of mine had a pup come down with parvo (and it made it through)...I was wondering whether what the vets office told him is true? they tried to tell him that if the vaccinations were self-administered from those found at feed store that they were more likely to acquire parvo, that those vaccinations are not kept "updated" to latest strains. I am kind of skeptical of this but then again I don't know for certain, for instance flu vaccinations for people are supposedly modified for some strains of flu virus but not sure if Parvo does have changes or not.

Hope your pup makes it through. We had a dog have a very bad attack of pancreatitis once and vomitted constantly (can't remember if he had it coming out the other end)...the vet injected water under his skin and after some TLC he made it back and has never since had another attack.

As long as your friend administered the vaccine correctly there is no greater risk doing so yourself. The vaccines from the feed stores are the same ones the vets buy. Its possible your vet uses a different brand he feels is more effective, but no vaccine is 100% effective, not really, in some cases the failure rate is REALLY REALLY low, but none of them are 100%. Alot of vets just don't like it when the vaccines are done out of their control.
