"puppy pass"

This is the first time I have a full grown giant dog and a "small" puppy. Luke and Moe get along fine most of the time, they eat together. Luke has never had any issues with resource guarding so did not anticipate any problems with that. They are okay with toys, of course they want the one the other one has. He will let Moe take one from him but are starting to get a little rough when he takes it back. There is more pawing and pushing from Luke's side randomly. He also can push Moe off the dog bed kind of rough just because he can. Moe is still in his kennel at night so they do not share the bed in the bedroom.
When does the "puppy pass" expire? It would not be an issue if Moe wasn't small, he is gaining steady but is only 30 lbs now at 4 1/2 months. And with the huge size difference Luke has already rammed into him a few times and made him cry. Jealousy I get but to me Luke is becoming more and more of a bully, but then I don't know if I'm over reacting. Right now as I type013.jpg011.jpg012.jpg this, Luke just went up to Moe and put his paw on his back and started pushing him with his head! Luke is also obsessed with licking Moe's privates, drives me nut, he is getting neutered Tue next week. Don't know if that will help that, but sure hope so.

Rhaegar is 7 and a half months old and it seems like his puppy pass with my other dogs never ran out even though he outweighs both my pit bull and my dane mix now. I honestly wish a little that it would have. He gets way too rough with them sometimes (especially considering they're both seniors), but they're still so patient and don't give him the level of reprimand I think he needs at this point. So that probably doesn't help you very much, sounds like we have opposite problems. I will say that Moe is absolutely adorable and is looking amazing!

Angus is 80 lbs and 1.5 years old and Thalia is 30 pounds and 3 years old. Angus' puppy pass is still going strong. She relinquishes her toys to him, gets roughed up by him when they are playing. She will sometimes stand up to him and maybe make a sound and nip at his face, but she never goes further than that and boy does he deserve it sometimes. When he takes a toy from her, I am pretty vigilant that I give the toy back to her and give him a stern "no!". I think Angus will always be her baby. When he is resting, she always snuggles with him and grooms his coat, ears and eyes (and sometimes his private area).

My 12 year old pit bull mutt liked one of my two puppies and just seemed to barely tolerate the other one until they hit 5 months old or so? Then she started attacking the one. She weighs about 45 lbs and they were around 75 lbs, don't know if weight had anything to do with it. She still is okay with the one pup, but I absolutely have to keep her separated from the other. They're 14 months old now.

Kryten's puppy pass with Jiggers lasted until they were close to the same size. I did (still do ) have a gentle command as Jiggers plays rough and even with the pass would slam into Kryten pushing him around. Jiggers is a bully and even though Kryten could seriously kick his butt now as he outweighs him by over 100 lbs we still have to tell him to back off at least once a day.
Jiggers does the genital licking which has decreased over time but I don't expect it to ever stop. And he was neutered before Kryten was born.

Angus never got a "puppy pass". Our Boxer thought he was fair game to play with like a big dog and had to be told gentle from day one to not "box" and roll him and he had to be told "no bite" too may times to count. He bit her neck so may times playing it looked like freckles from the little scabs! (so glad those razor sharp puppy teeth are GONE!) Toys and especially bones can be an issue still and we step in. If the can't play nice whatever it is gets taken away from both of them. He outweighs her by 30 lbs now and we still have to monitor their play - she will plow into and roll him. Goofy pup just gets up and trots after her. He does get even though by sitting on her - which she HATES! No genital licking but they will lick each other muzzle to see who got the better meal. :)

If you do not use any soaps on him or just don't bathe him his pass will last much longer. The amount of puppy smell they keep seems to help with the level and duration of the "puppy pass" time.
