He is for sure a cutie. Just remember he is a guardian breed and as he gets around 6 months and up he will begin to dislike strangers more and more especially on walks. You still will have to have to keep a keen eye even around people he is familiar with, sometimes outside influences (other dogs barking or strange people) can make your dog tense. I learned that the hardway where my corso nipped someone he was friendly with because I didn't realize the surroundings where making him uncomfortable. Luckily the nip was not bad, I got extremely lucky so please exercise caution I don't want any one new to the guardian mastiffs like me make the same mistake and be put through a very stressful situation.

i have never actually met a fila in person and actually didnt even know what one was until i came here but if im not mistaken they are bred from a mastiff and a blood hound right? i dont get it thoe i have met and been around bloundhounds plenty og times and never once have they been agressive towards me or anyone else...is it the mixture that makes them that way?

We had a blood hound as a kid he was a hunting dog but you could not hand off his leash to anyone at all. He would bite.

Thats a good question that I dont have the answer to. I'm not sure where exactly ojeriza comes from

"ojeriza" is just a word... it is a very, very high defense drive. The Fila Brasileiro is not a "mix" it is a breed. that is like saying the doberman is a terrier and some other mixture... what went into the Fila Brasileiro is in there now and cannot be "recreated" so to speak. Most people believe it was the Olde English Mastiff (not the English mastiff of today), the Olde English bulldog (not the crippled mess we call an English bulldog today) and a bloodhound.... understand that even today MANY bloodhounds are hands off dogs and many will bite. IMO the "Mastiff" that was used was the Spanish mastiff (makes more sense Geographically and looks more like a Fila in appearance and even had a somewhat similar job) and there is probably more than just a few other breeds that were mixed in there. understand that since the breed has been established for so long you cannot "make" a fila by crossing a bloodhound, an EM and an EB, it just doesnt work that way just like crossing an English bulldog and English mastiff wont get you a Bull Mastiff... get it? The "ojeriza" as well as other traits are the results of countless generations of breeding for work related functions just like in any other breed.

I have to say that like most I have never heard of this breed until today! I am amazed by the stories of this breed. It is not the dog for me. But none the less a beautiful true guardian. I applaud all of you on here that helped this girl out instead of bashing her for not knowing what she was getting into. That is not something that you find with a lot of people. I will continue to read this forum as this is some of the best and most HONEST ones that I have run across. LOL And I love your no holds barred commentary!!

wonder what happened with the OP and the pup?? I know some fila owners do live in urban environments but they are better suited for out on the farm or sticks somewhere unless you have a very well fenced area. Sure, it is possible to own one otherwise but I imagine alot of work and inconvenient as heck to walk them and what not (stressful).

I have to admit we've stomped on a few folks. For example theres a distinct lack of tolerance for BYBs and folks who decide to breed without doing testing or being responsible. Posting on here as one such will result in alot of people having a serious snit at you. But yah, this is by far one of the better message boards I've hung around on.

As they should get stomped!!!!!! No dog should come for BYB or other not so smart people. But this dog DEF should only be sold/bred/kept by responsible, knowlege, driven people!!!! I have the outmost respect for this breed they are truly amazing! There was one post I was reading with some arrog AHOLE that was acting like a know it all and I wanted to stomp him. I love this forum the stories on here are amazing. I even checked out some of the videos. Again Thank you ALL

No Chuck it wasn't you!!! LMAO I feel like I am hanging with my friends reading your posts!!! It was a young 20 something kid that was talking about getting a FILA and he had "read everything" and knew everything about this breed. You all as usual tried to help him and he was just being a cocky lil Ahole

It's like that scene in Office Space where they take a printer out in the field and stomp on it.

When it comes to Fila's on here you have two roads, listen or start something. Now if were talking cafib non cafib, all bets are off. ahahahaha. I was that dumb ass when I got here. But I try to listen. I was way off in what a fila was even with reading and knowing everything. It's not something you can just read about. I think I could handle a TM from reading Ruth's and Mooshis post. But after having a fila, I know damn well I dont really get it. I could get it, but I dont as of right now. Even with a fila, I only know what I've experianced or my own theories. Dogman, mountain, ace, AB and the like are the folks guys like me HAVE to listen to. At least when your first getting into the fila. Same could be said about Cody and Blackshadow for the cc's and Mooshi and ruth for TM and DD for Danes and on and on. There are others as well there, but those are some folks that stick out in my mind as knowing their shit for their perspective breeds.
