Parvo Aftermath

Good to hear that 2 meals went fine. Unfortunately, gas is part of life with a mastiff. Some people give Gas X to help with the gas. Titan tends to have more gas with chicken than any other meat.

I have heard that it is worse with Mastiffs... She doesn't seem to be bothered by it either. I guess with her being our first mastiff, I was just concerned that something was wrong (or that the transition wasn't going well). She has a vet appointment next week (shots/spay). Hopefully it will be better by then, or I'll talk to the vet about it.

Yea, it's a part of life owning a mastiff. Just do a search for gas on the forum and you'll see the number of members who have the opportunity to own a gassy mastiff. :)

Own a Cocker Spaniel if you want to know what a stinky fart is...
But the severity is always going to depend on what you feed them.

Ok... new issues.

We are on day 7 of PMR. She gets about 2-2.5 pounds of leg quarters/backs/wings per day. Solid poop for the last 3 days, although it is smaller, but she still goes about 4 times a day. Her gas has decreased also, thankfully.

Yesterday morning and this morning she snubbed her nose at her breakfast. She will smell it, lick it and walk away. I gave her a 2 inch peice of turkey neck yesterday and enticed her to eat all of her breakfast. This morning, not even the turkey neck is working. My husband put honey on it and that didn't even work. I just don't get it.

Her Stats/Eating... She hasnt gained any weight in the last 3 weeks... I'm getting worried...

Date Weight Pounds / Food
11-Apr 20 3.5 cups kibble
12-Apr 20.5 3.25 cups kibble
13-Apr 21 4 cups kibble
14-Apr 21.6 5.25 cups kibble
15-Apr 21.4 2.5 cups kibble
16-Apr 21 0.50 pounds / 3 chicken wings
17-Apr 20.4 0.50 pounds / 3 chicken wings
18-Apr 19.6 1.50 pounds / 2 chicken wings, leg quarters
19-Apr 21 2.50 pounds / Leg quarters
20-Apr 20.8 2.75 pounds / Leg quarters, wing
21-Apr 21 2.25 pounds / Leg quarters, turkey neck
22-Apr 20.8

Has she not eaten at ALL, or just not breakfast? Is she drinking normally? Otherwise acting normally? Pooping normally?

Have you tried boneless meat yet? I doubt it but she may be tired of working to have to eat. A lot of people suggest sprinkling Parmesan cheese over the meal. Personally, I use real butter. If it is boneless meat, I melt some butter in a pan, turn off the heat and throw the meat in. Cane likes his meals warm. A meal with bone I would score the meaty part and pour a little melted butter on it.

No, she is eating. Just not breakfast. She ate lunch okay, dinner we had to entice her. Shes been kinda depressed looking. Could be the hot weather.

We put breakfast down for her around 8am... no interest. Took her to the dog park and for a walk. Tried again at 11am... no interest.

She hasnt drank much since starting the new diet (not like she used to), but i've read that is normal.

Yup, they usually drink less when they're eating raw. And yup the heat will do it too.

I'd transition in some less bony meats and see how she does, but if you've had some hot weather that WILL depress their appetite!

My Oldest dog Duncan does this. He just does not want to eat in the morning, and sometimes Jade will do it as well. I just put the food away and bring it back out at lunch, if they don't eat it they will not get it again until the next day. I figure they either have stomach upset or are full. Possibly being picky so when it is offered the next day they will eat it 10 out of 10 times. As long as your dog is eating you should be fine if you want her to gain more weight just increase the portions or try adding some fatty meat like pork. When feeding pork some say to deep freeze it for a week then partially thaw and serve semi-frozen.

If the pork is USDA inspected you don't have to freeze it. Freezing is recommended for wild boar or if you are getting your meat from an unreputable source.

I agree but someone recently really insisted that this was very important, saying all pork was infected and even went so far as quoting bible about how bad pork is. So I wanted to make sure I was covered this time. Deb will know what I am talking about.

I hear you, Mike. However, it doesn't help to state something that is down right false just to appease some religious fanatic.

I'm not picking on you Mike but people new to feeding raw are already apprehensive. I know I was.

Well I did say "Some say to deep freeze it" ;) Personally I alternate my pork, new goes in freezer frozen goes in the meat tray just because it is easier to portion out and my dogs don't like it when it is thawed all the way. Same with the chicken, if it is fully thawed (especially boneless) they pick at it, but if it is firm they munch it right up.

She ate one chicken leg for dinner yesterday... That's it all day long. We took it off the bone and cut it up and nothing... We even put butter and Parmesan on it and she licked it a few times and walked away. Its weird though because she loves her chicken jerky treats (she's a pup so we have training sessions). She gobbles those right up.

I'm going to try a little pork mixed with her chicken today and if that works... Also going to try ground up chicken...

Sounds like someone is training you. *winking* Stop the treats. Cut some meat up for her from the chicken to use for training to see if that works.

Yup. She's figured out that if she holds out you'll give her good stuff. Basically she's using your desire to fatten her up to get what she wants.

We werent giving her many treats... She gets 2 jerky peices per day and thats it. Whether she eats or not, thats all she gets.

Either way... We gave her a little pork for breakfast and chicken. She scarfed them both right up. Thinking it was a combination of her being backed up (She took two large poops, one last night and one this morning... both solid) and it being so hot today...

Heat will cause the dog to not eat. I will still consider no more treats until she starts eating her regular food. JMO
