Panting after fight

Took my 11 month old mastiff to the dog park where he got into a fight with another mastiff. He got cut on his muzzle, but I put peroxide and antibiotic cream on it. Is that enough? He's been panting for about an hour since and I think it's just because of the stress but wonder if this is normal for stress and a little pain from the cut.

Enzo, my pit x neo got into a fight with a rotti when he was about 9 months old. He got a deep cut on his side. I shaved his fur around the cut back and threw some butterfly stitches over the wound. But as far as panting, no he was fine. If Enzo acted like your dog is acting I would take him to the vet.

i don't know if I'd take him to the vet so soon. When I pulled Ebony off a Pom a few months ago, she wasn't hurt at all but nevertheless sat there panting for a bit before calming down. Recently, it's been so d*mn hot up here I don't give it a second thought if she's panting after even a little exertion. I'd say if he was outdoors playing/fighting at a dog park in July, panting for a while afterward would be normal.

If it were me, I'd keep the cut clean (sounds like you've got that covered) and keep a close eye on the dog. Unless it's a very deep cut, it'll probably heal just fine on it's own. If your pup is still acting over-stressed or the cut gets inflamed in the next couple of days I'd say make an appointment to have a vet look at it.

This is why dog parks are a bad idea. Nothing but a place for your dog to get in trouble, get attacked, or get a disease/parasite.

I'm new here, but IMHO it's not totally unusual for a dog to pant for awhile after a fight. The adrenalin gets to going and the stress of fighting for what probably seemed like life and the pain of an injury is plenty enough to get the dog panting. If it is excessive and goes on for several hours, I would have him checked out. In the mean time, just keep an eye on him and also be sure you have looked the dog over really well to make sure there are no other injuries that may have been overlooked.

I have to also agree with some of the previous posts, I am not a huge fan of dog parks. So many poorly trained and socialized dogs are there and all too often problems arise.

I hope your dog heals up quickly and doesn't have any further problems. Hopefully, he just needs a little TLC and some rest.:D
