Olive Oil or Coconut oil?

I've seen where alot of members on the Forum add Olive oil or Coconut oil and i believe i have even seen where they add fish oil also to their pups food. My question is which is better and how much should I put in their food each day?

which ever one works best for him

For coconut oil approx 1 tablespoon per 30lbs of dog, but start with only a little and work your way up slowly! It can cause diarrhea if you give to much to fast.

(coconut oil makes awesome popcorn BTW!)

Is it the same amount with Olive oil and Fish oil? I'm going to start tomorrow, how long before i start to see a difference in their coats? Titan seems to have alot of dandruff lately and i was thinking this might help. I take them to the vet once a month to get a bath, nail trim and ears cleaned since i started keeping them inside everyday and it seems like he started getting the dandruff after that.

Coconut oil is good but it cannot match the good properties of Extra virgin olive oil. My formula is different. I studied from the book called "The Whole Pet Diet" by Andi Brown. The author recommends mixing different oils and make it a blend say take 500ml of extra virgin olive oil along with 100ml salmon oil, 100ml wheatgerm oil and 100ml flaxseed oil. Mix all together in a blender and pour it into a dark colour glass bottle. You can keep this bottle in the refrigerator. According to the pet's weight, we can supplement the oil as follows:
2 - 11 pounds - 1/2 teaspoon(2.5ml).
12 - 25 pounds - 1 teaspoon(5ml).
26 - 50 pounds - 2 teaspoon(10ml)
51 - 100 pounds - 1 tablespoon(15ml)
100 pounds+ - please follow the above limits for every pound limit so a dog which is more than 150 pounds gets 2 tablespoon a day(30ml)

My dogs get 7.5ml in the morning and another 7.5ml in the night. I have 5 dogs(15ml each). Hence they consume 75ml a day. My wife mix these oils thrice a month. So a total of 2,250ml a month for 5 dogs. But she mix 2400ml a month. Remaining 150ml will be consumed in another 2 days. So our preparation comes for 32 days.

Even my BM and rottie which is more than 100 lbs gets only 15ml per day(they have great coat) as they already get a high quality food with optimum levels of protein and fat. So i generally don't recommend going over 15ml a day. But if you want immediate results then you can double the dosage into 30ml per day.

I think the oils all serve different purposes.
Fish oil is a source of Omega 3's. Denna gets a human sized dose daily (2 capsules of this stuff)
Coconut oil is a source of Lauric acid, which can help boost the immune system - Denna finds is very, very tasty, but doesn't get it on a regular basis

From dheepakh's mix - which looks very intriguing!
Flax is also a source of Omega 3's
Wheatgerm oil is a good source of Vitamin E
Olive Oil contains oleic acid which may have some health benefits - we don't feed this one, so had to google it - found this article: 8 Reasons to Add Olive Oil to Your Dogs Diet | Dogster

I might have to start mixing things up for Denna a bit more - thanks for sharing your recipe , Dheepakh!

I use both and alternate them in Titan's food. I used coconut oil on his face but noticed it's not really help with the dry muzzle so I started applying olive oil to his face yesterday to see if it makes a difference.

I gently heat the coconut oil (1 tablespoon) for about 30 seconds in the microwave and then pour on Titan's food. He licks the bottom of his bowl after eating his food. When I add olive oil, I pour about 1-2 teaspoons.

Wow thanks for recipe, it sounds great. Titan weighs about 100pds and Corelina weighs about 90pds, so one tablespoon each everyday should do the trick right?

I would like to try different types too. I already have EVOO and fish oil at home and i would like to try the coconut oil as well. Do you think it will help Titan's dandruff problem?

Ok, thanks i will try that too. Can i get that at any grocery store or is it a specialty item? I don't remember seeing it with the other oils, but i have never really looked for it either.
The salmon oil seems to make A big difference in
Ninjas coat. No more dry skin.

Oh yes! 1 tablespoon a day is enough for a 100lb dog. Even my male BM who weighs 110lbs gets only 1 tablespoon a day as he already gets a high quality food. There is no need to go over 15ml but if you want to see immediately results, double the amount of oil.
Also there are studies telling that giving fish oil alone will deplete the Vit E levels in the body. Thats why we should add wheatgerm oil to adjust the levels. Try the recipe and you will definitely see the improvement. Also it is good for their heart.

Something to consider is the calorie content of the coconut oil. The brand we have is 130 cal per tablespoon.

Ok, I really want to try your recipe. Can i get all of the ingredients at Wal Mart or a vitamin store? Also what brand do you feed your pups? I am feeding Earthborn Holistic Medows Feast right now.

Ok, I am leaning towards dheepakh's recipe right now. If i decide to give them coconut oil it will only be once a week maybe. That should be ok right? How much do you give to your pups?
