Diaper? Do they bleed that much? When exactly does this start? I swear i researched the breed before buying but didnt research caring for a female dog the only dog i ever owned previously was a male.

Usually around a year sometimes earlier. They will leave drops of blood everywhere during part of their heat. Some people prefer to just put dog diapers on them.

Duchess is almost 10 months old & just started her heat I think it was Sunday. I was wishful thinking she wouldn't go before 18 months but she did. I will have her spayed at 18 months as I do not wish to deal with heat cycles for the rest of her life. Not saying I couldn't handle it I just choose not to. I use the diaper bc I don't want her dripping blood everywhere. She's ok with wearing, it's just now a fight to get it on her when she's done outside. I really hope her heat is only 10 days but I know that's also wishful thinking....

Spaying or neutering early in any breed causes them problems in development.
Med/sm can be done by a year
Lg/giant can be done at a year but better to wait till 15 mos or for a female 3rd cycle.
I personally make my buyers wait till 15 months on male & 18 months on female.
Hormones just like in us take a major part in our developement.

Deb, so did I case issues when I spayed my yorkie mix at 6 months? She will be 7 years old this year & has been healthy her whole life minus her teeth getting tartar on them but I have her teeth cleaned once a year.

Hun not all dogs have issues from it. Could her teeth problem be from lack of hormones maybe or maybe not.
I put no one down for doing what they do.
I only go off of growth patterns I have watched thru my breeding and others.
Hormones are a major part in our growth patterns & platelets.
Vets only have started sterilizing animals earlier bc it is easier on the pups body and less bleeding.
There are 22 vets at the place I work at, and most not all bc some I do not see due to the fact I come in for emergency hours. But I have asked there thoughts and even our bone specialist stated it effects bone growth plates.
Bc I have giants, large & small dogs I like to know information for my clients, work clients and myself.

I think that vets are no different than anyone else- You are going to know more about what you are familiar with. Prior to purchasing our EM I registered for this site so I could get information- I immediately researched vets and ended up travelling across town to our breeders vet. I am very glad that I made those two decisions, our vet told us flat out to listen to our breeder they knew what they were talking about and he agreed no surgery until he's older!

From what I understand a heat cycle can last 10-21 days, sometimes longer. And can occur about every 6 months. From the research I've done every dog is different & can even go into heat a few times a year. Usually when they stop bleeding is when you really have to watch them. They put off a scent that intact males can smell from a long ways away.

Jade was 7 days going in 7 days no bleed, then 7 days going out with bleed. Give or take a day either way.

So when Jade was bleeding she was coming out? D has been spotting/steadily bleeding since Sunday so almost a week. But I didn't notice any swelling prior to Sunday

My vet advised that I get Astrid spayed before her first heat, stating that the beneficial effect of spaying for breast cancer went away after that. I had my own theories about early spaying causing my St Bernard not to experience full growth, so I did my own research. This is an excellent, nonbiased synopsis of multiple studies:

http://www.skeptvet.com/index.php?p=1_23_Benefits-Risks-of-Neutering

It is long, but it is worth reading. I won't be getting Astrid spayed anytime soon- she is 7 months.

The risks of breast cancer aren't an issue till the dog is 2 or older except in very rare situations *sigh* and neither does it complety remove the chance of it, just signifigantly reduces it. I hate that vets use "cancer!!!" as a way to scare pet owners into spay/neuter. I can't figure out if its a deliberate step on their part or if they are honestly unaware of the real % of risk. To be fair they DO get to see those cancer patients, and what they suffer through, and those dogs probly stick on their minds better than the healthy dogs, but still.....(its a peeve, can you tell?)

Once every few months for a couple of weeks aint too bad. Someone mentioned swelling--is that how you can tell they are going into heat?
