Need some help with P, please

Her food stayed down, then she went back and finished her breakfast - 2 cups. Her poop is still normal so hopefully this is the beginning of the end. I'm going to wait until tonight to feed her again.

She ate her dinner fine last night and her breakfast has stayed down this morning. Poop is still normal. She seems better although she still isn't very excited about eating. I've cut her back to four cups per day - 2 in the morning and 2 at night, at least for now. She's fine with skipping lunch.

She's blushing and running away in terror. :D

I just wish I knew what caused her tummy trouble this time. It's frustrating not to know what sets her off.

I'm glad she's feeiling better. I can tell you that with my Al, any little thing he ingested that wasn't food would totally mess up his gastrointestinal system. Fatty foods would do it too. He once ate a few tiny pieces of a soft plastic toy and pooped them out in a mess of mucus and blood twenty minutes later. I know when he ate them because I left my daughter watching him, had a beer, and came back in to the destroyed toy. It's crazy how sensitive some of these dogs can be.

I had a German Shepherd that would goo on food strikes off and on for no apparent reason. If Miss P stays a good weight/body condition on 4 cups a day all is good. Remi is larger than your baby and is doing well at 5 cups daily right now. I also wanted to add that if she does well on a food ignore ratings etc and feed it. No need to feel guilt. Her hair shines in her pictures and she is in good condition. Go with it.

I know it must be so frustrating because you want to be able to stop this from happening again? P is such a lovely girl; I read another post where you said the breeder reduced the price because she had a pointy head? Oh my goodness, you got quite the deal, because she is a beautiful mastiff?

Here's to hoping that things clear up and you don't go through this again.

Thank you. She'll never have the giant head EMs are known for and she'll always be small, but I love her. She's a sweetheart when she's not destroying things. :D

I'm glad I found this thread. We have been dealing with the same issue for the past 4 months. We have been on the same grain-free, chicken-free food for the past 2 1/2 years (pacific stream TOTW). We add pumpkin to every meal and all of a sudden it seems the kibble isn't working for Brinks.
Last month, the vet had us bring the bag back and get a different bag and it seemed to work (he would eat the kibble again & stool firms up). I don't know if it's a bad batch that we keep getting or what.
I ,too, have been hesitant to change food since it's worked so well for 2 years. The bouts of diarrhea and bloody stool, as well as, vomiting occasionally and loss of appetite are darn right heartbreaking. Not to mention difficult to leave your baby when you have to leave for work (we end up having a sitter come twice during the day instead of once!).
We typically withhold food for 12-24 hrs, then put him on the rice and boiled meat diet for a few days. The vet also has me give him Pepcid AC when he has the bile vomit, add a probiotic for 7 days and Endosorb to slow the poo - that seems to help.
This week, however, I had a new bag of kibble & have been trying to slowly reintroduce the kibble and every time I do the poo gets loose again. So I guess I'm going to try another bag.
The vet says if it doesn't work, she wants to put him on science diet or a vet prescribed food,. I know a lot of people disagree with the vet recommended food, I happened to be one of them, but as everyone on here has mentioned -if it works for your dog - don't listen to everyone else. I plan to give it a try if a new bag doesn't do it this time.
Keep us posted on her progress and hang in there!

Sometimes the pup will grow tired of the food and stop eating it. Stay within the same brand and try switching flavors every 2-3 months.

The pup is throwing up bile because his stomach is empty. Feeding a pup on hardcore schedule can cause bile vomit. Feed off schedule a few times so the stomach is not looking for food and then throws up bile.

Do not feed science diet, it's horrible food.

Brinks, are you still with TOTW? I know a lot of people feed it, but one of my guys flat out refused to eat it and it gave the other runny poop. All varieties and flavors gave him poop and blood soup. I do think that there are better foods than science diet, but some people really love it and it works for them. My big issue with them is that the ingredients aren't very good but the price is very high, particularly if you get it from the vet. There are other foods out there with comparable ingredients and a lower price tag. After years of trying every food out there, we feed Kirkland. I know that a lot of people don't like Kirkland, but we have none of the reported problems and my guys all love it. Their poops are nice and firm, even the boy with the sensitive tummy. What other foods have you tried? Or is your vet wanting you to go with a prescription diet? If so, which one? My daughter just brought home a science diet brochure that the company gives to practices (she's in vet tech school and they were doing nutrition) and I have it sitting right here. I think it has ingredients in the back.

We just picked up the bag of Hill's Z/D from the vet. I'm not ecstatic
about it but I said I would try it for 5 weeks and move him to a better food. (I'm sure the vet loved hearing that but I just don't want to keep him on it....unless of course it works...then I'll have to suck it up).
Foods we tried in the past that ended in runny poo: Fromm, Wellness & Earthborn Holistics.
I've never tried Kirkland but I see many on this site that use it- might try that next, just have to re-up my Costco membership!

A week later and still runny poo :(. He acts fine and eats/drinks. We actually only tried the prescription food plus rice x 3 days. I don't know if I should demand more tests or give the prescription food a chance.
How's Penelope?

although this is what I also have been dealing with my 13 month old EM since he was a pup I have only worked with 3 kibbles. The one was junk-thats what he came home with and the other 2 are a good quality kibble but he just was not adapting well. afetr ruling out a few other things I determined it was his food doing this.

One of the main things that made me have a AH-HA moment is in your post which I put in Bold and I have seen it through all other post as well.

My question to me was If this worked, then why would I go away from it? If placing your dog on this diet for a few days and is recommended and works, then why walk away from it?

I know raw diet plays doubt to an owner as it did me, that I could not possibly keep up with it or keep it balanced. Or there is way to much info to learn and I barely have the time with everything else I cram in my day.

But, that rice and chicken advice always stuck with me, why would I walk away if it works?

Keep trying and if you get to the end as I did, keep an open mind on raw diet.

And "P" I hope your still feeling better!?
