Need a new dog food urgently, Blue Buffalo Warning

We use a food called Nature's Select. All ingredients are made in the US; it's comparable in price to most high quality feeds. To my knowledge it's never been on a recall list. And best of all free home delivery, if there's a distributor in your area. When you're feeding 4 or 5 dogs & live in a flood zone (Elevated house) carrying all that dog food is a pain. Our delivery guy always stops & plays with the dogs for minute; they all love him & he doesn't even feed them treats when he comes. Check it out: http://naturalpetfooddelivery.com/
W
e use the chicken & rice w/glucosamine. We have to be careful because of Magee's diabetes, & we hoped that the glucosamine would help Deedee's arthritis & Ruby's growing pains.

I shop at the feed stores for my bullmastiffs food. The brand of dog food is called "Taste of the Wild". Also, another brand that is good for them is "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul", also at the feed store. Both these are all natural ingredients and high in protein. Very good and healthy!

You could go with the Gaea formula but it is a chicken based food and some mastiffs have problems with chicken. You could also do the black forest formula. The southwest chicken would be okay too but again you're looking at chicken as the protein source. Also these foods aren't grain free and some mastiffs have problems with grains.

Apparently the gaea has chicken too so if you're looking to avoid common mastiff allergens timberwolf is not the food for you.

Sometimes dogs can be okay for awhile and then develop problems but if you're confident that he's okay with chicken and grains than I would go with the Gaea.

went to my pet feed store tonight to look around. im getting pretty confused. alot to choose from. they showed me california natural but i havent seen it anywhere listed so i passed. rocky is 6 months old and i was told to get a low protein food for his joints. is that correct? i see you are using earthborn , they carry that. i want to switch him off the chicken now, dont need any allergies popping up.but looked at earthborn great plains but seems high in protein. their meadow formula is at 26% would you suggest it . it has lamb meal i believe. im so lost now.:(.

It's not the protein levels, its the calcium and phosphorus. Foods with higher protein levels tend to have higher ratios of calcium to phosphorus. You want a calcium to phosphorus ratio of 1:1.2 or as close as possible. All the formulas of earthborn have been deemed appropriate by the canine nutritionist I know in another forum. We just choose great plains. It's a good, moderately priced food that we've had no problems with.

I completely Agree with @blackshadowcanecorso, Acana and Orijen, both being Champion pet foods- are AMAZING brands of food. Their product is always made with fresh ingredients, grain free and the meats are never frozen. It helps ease your mind as well- when you can READ all of the ingredients and arent left wondering- wtf does this word mean?! :) We made our switch not to long ago from Royal Canin to Acana, and my Siberian husky was so enthralled in this new kibble- he litterally ROLLED his face around in his food before he even ate it. Our dogs have the fullest, shinniest coats with great skin [Our Olde english bulldog's hot spots are completely gone!] and our NEW addition- Ari- our 2 month old SPANISH MASTIFF Eats the food like he has never eaten before [which ofcourse leads me to watching his eating habits] ALSO you can purchase Acana/Orijen online at Petfooddirect.com where you can also set up auto ship- and they give you discounts! Its been VERY helpful seeing as we are currently stationed overseas and the only food available to us here is Kibbles n bits, Purina, Pedigree and benefel... YUCK.

About the cal/phos ratio... I know you want it close to 1:1.2 but which way would it have to be off in to result in faster growth or slower growth? Is 1:0.8 too far off and if so in which direction (faster/slower)?

Also, I use the grain free all life stages foods from costco (we mix the 2 to get 2 protein sources) I read before that the ratio's in it are OK for giant breeds but I don't know what they are, does anyone here know?

Ok, first off, what exactly is this Kidney failure thing with Blue Buffalo. If its because of that FDA warning on chicken jerky please pay more attention to the facts and not rumors, NO products were recalled with that warning, and Blue doesn't source any of its products from China. I'm hoping that rumor is the result of someone not knowing how to read the FDA page for recalls, which can be confusing, not because they're that much of an idiot, but its spread ALL OVER the internet thanks to whoever it was. If the kidney warning was because of excess vitamin D that recall was completed by summer 2011.

FDA chicken jerky warning.

FDA list of pet food recalls (note, when reading specific recalls, they will ALWAYS say date last update the same as the last time the entire LIST was updated, you have to look at the dates of the recall itself)

2nd, Taste of the Wild doesn't contain any corn, infact every package I have ever seen is specifically labeled "Does not contain corn or soy". No corn, no aflatoxin. Which doesn't mean that I like Diamond as a manufactor, cause I don't, but please don't spread rumors.

Disclaimer, I do NOT and never have fed BB to my dogs, I have fed TOTW on occasion but they aren't huge fans.

Not sure if this will help but I used to feed TLC which is delivered to your door!!! Loved the food, the dogs did great on it. http://www.tlcpetfood.com The only reason I'm not now is my one dog has developed an allergy to lamb... I loved it, as I had my order on auto ship so I never had to think about getting food, it was always there when I needed it...

I never said totw had corn, I said its manufactured in the same factor as some of the other diamond foods that do and I don't feel comfortable with the risk of cross contamination. That's my personal feeling and preference but thanks :)

Just a thought, with all the back and forth on kibble and all the different opinions, no one has mentioned raw. It was scary when I first started feeding raw and with everyone that feeds raw it was scary at first. And there are differing opinions on that too! But in discussions about the best foods for our loves don't forget about raw. You control what you feed them and if your babies have allergies you can control that as well.:)

Oh we have had plenty of discussions about raw haha. I for one would love to feed raw but in my area there are no butcher shops and price wise it's out of our range right now to feed two to three dogs on grocery store raw. We also don't have the space to store raw but as soon as we get orders somewhere that has butcher shops and we have more space I'm getting a freezer just to hold our raw stash. We do raw treats or an occasional raw meal right now, I really wish we could do it full time.
