my vet's recipe for arthritis

So Hector at 5 years old has bad elbows. He has been limping for a month that with lots of rest did not show any improvement and this is not normal for him so we went to get xrays. Xrays showed bone growths on both elbows and the right one is worse than the left which made everything make sense. I am posting a video of the day I picked him up from the vets. He is extra stiff because he had been there all day, but his normal limp is not any better. The next video is 3 weeks on my vet's arthritis recipe. He is walking better than ever. He no longer can go on pack walks or long walks and is restricted to around a block or two. Nothing has ever made such a significant difference. So here it is for anyone with arthritic dogs.

Oh and on a good note, his spinal stenosis has not worsened in the past 3 years. Doc said a part of his lower spine fused or grew a bridge to stabilize itself, but the part with stenosis looks great. We don't know if the joint supplements in the last 3 years helped or not. It may have, but it also may have been the doing of the body itself.

Wow! He looks great in the second vid...and so, so pained in the first. I've saved the image and will keep it in case we have to go down that road. Still, I am amazed with how he has turned it around. Way to Go, Hector! And aren't you lucky to have such a good mom.

I know right! I'm so happy. Nothing has worked so well in the past. All these glucosamine supplements, green lipped mussel, turmeric paste, etc etc. This is the magic recipe for Hector.

Hector looks great in that second video! So much perkier in the head & taill, both. :)

Denna's getting the glucosamine, fish oil and Vit E... plus Vit C (just ascorbic acid) once a week... no Sam-E yet though, might have to try that one.
Her "bum knee" is still an issue... but she doesn't let it slow her down - which is part of the problem... she feels good enough for zoomies, and when I don't stop her quick enough, she feels it later when it stiffens up. :(

I can't remember... Have you tried turmeric-golden-paste at all for Hector? That's really helped Denna (for those that don't know... she tore her CCL about 11 months ago, and we're avoiding surgery).

Here's WebMD's comment about SAMe: "The body uses SAMe to make certain chemicals in the body that play a role in pain, depression, liver disease, and other conditions. People who don't make enough SAMe naturally may be helped by taking SAMe as a supplement."

Thanks DM! He's walking even better now. He doesn't show limping when he walks, but we are limited to going up the hill and back down which is probably 1/4 mile.

Is Denna's leg all healed up or are you guys still in the healing process? Is there a time where she will be able to do what she wants or will she always be monitored and restricted on certain activites?

Yes - we have tried the turmeric paste 2 different times and each time at least a month 2x a day almost 1 tsp each time. I really didn't see any changes, but on this list of supplements I really do. It is the first time in his life I have seen any supplement or anything work for him.

Today Hector walked .8 mile. That is a big improvement since the bony elbows. This is a huge deal!! Now to see if there is any inflammation tomorrow.

I do the fish oil and glucosamine, but I will have to add the other stuff. Cora doesn't have arthritis, but she is still stiff from her TPLO.. I notice a huge difference when she isn't taking fish oil. Axel is just a big healthy horse, but prevention is key! Thanks for sharing!! :)

You are welcome and I hope it helps! I cut the vit C dosage in half as he was getting the semi runs and I couldn't tell if it was from the liquid fish oil, vit c, or the liquid glucosamine. I only give him 1000mg a day of vit c and I split the dosage between breakfast and dinner on the fish oil and glucosamine and his body seems to take it better that way.

Thank you fila4me! He can finally walk without being in pain. I also noticed when I had to stop walking him, he started getting hyperkeratosis on his paws but now has managed to keep them away because he can walk again.

I’m definitely going to try this with Cora! I shared this with my friend who has a pit/mastiff who has a little osteoarthritis in his elbow. She’s very happy I shared it with her!!
