My puppy has an UTI?

Hi,
I have a 12 weeks old female puppy. On Saturday she started to pee a lot, like 10 times in 5 minute and sometimes a little pink-ish, so I rushed her to the vet. Since I got there fast with her, the vet said we could try an anti-inflammatory and something to help her immune system. She did get better, no more whining and no more pink drops of pee. When I got home from work today she was great, so I thought everything was better, no need for antibiotics, the backup plan. However, about 1 hour ago the pee started again.. She would pee very often and sometimes only a few drops.
I want to take a sample of her pee to the vet, however I am not sure how to collect it?
Also, is there anything else that I can do for her? She is only eat kibble right now. She always has fresh water, but other than that? I am afraid to introduce anything to her diet, as it might upset her little stomach. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Same thing with our 13-week old. Started 3 weeks ago, we did 2 weeks of antibiotics, but as of last Tuesday, the vet still saw some crystals in the pee and sent it out to a lab for further analysis. She is also on kibbles only, so am not sure what caused it. I have her on cranberry supplements, which supposed to help with UTIs.

Cranberry supplements helped our cat after her UTI.
That and making sure she drank enough water to keep flushed out.

Aw, I hope she feels better. My DDB had the same problem when we first got her around 10 weeks. I used a ladle to collect urine which worked like a charm. When she squats sneak it under from behind. I then put it into a zip lock bag (which certainly isn't sterile, but you do what you can). I would suggest a lot of fresh water, frequent visits outside (we did ever 30mins for a few weeks)she went on antibiotics for quite some time, so i added a small amount of plain greek yogurt (least amount of sugar)to her food, got rid of any old dirty toys (our other dogs toys primarily) that she was playing with, kept her dog dishes really clean etc.. Overall, hang in there! I know taking the pup out every 20-30mins isn't ideal but with a face like that, I'm sure you'll be patient :)

Thank you everyone for your helpful advice. I did manage to get some pee from her this morning. I will take it to the vet today after work :) I didn't have a sterile container, so I just put in a tiny tiny jar since she didn't pee an awful lot.
I will go and get some cranberries supplements. Can these be for human use?
I will also her her some ester-c, since I understand that it helps her immune system. It doesn't help that she is a tiny puppy and she has to grow up during the winter time.
As for taking her outside, I am a little hesitant to do that since yesterday was her first trip outside and only managed to get some pee from her. I am afraid that she is holding it in till she gets inside, won't that hurt her? I took her out for about 15 mins.

You can also use unscented baby wipes to clean her after she goes to the bathroom to help keep the area clean. I would take her out and wait her out until she goes to the potty outside. When I potty train I always take them out on a leash until they do they business of course praise praise praise and a treat, then I let them off leash as a reward to play.

When you take her outside, does she squat every few steps? Also, we noticed on day 3 a mucus like stuff after each time she peed and continuous drops coming out of her. That went away after 3 days of round one of antibiotics and she seemed to be getting better. We did give her water allot, but then it made her go more often, which is the best thing that can happen in the situation. As for the cranberry supplements, the ones we are giving our puppy are definitely for humans, since we got them at a local Rite Aid. Someone in the above threads mentioned Apple Cider and my trainer recommended the same or the Cranberry Juice mixed in water. We bought a bottle, but haven't given her any yet. Good luck!

I do have baby wipes for her. I will make sure to wipe her everytime she goes. I have taken her outside a couple of times today and she seems to get the gist of it, that it's safe to pee/poop outside.

She doesn't squat that often, she maybe pees 5 times in 30 minutes or so. Its not a lot, but it's definitely more often that she used to. I have not seen mucus so far. She always has fresh water, including during the night. I never left her without it.
I will drop by the pharmacy tomorrow and get her the cranberry supplements and also some apple cider vinegar(don't know if I can find that here).
I am sorry to hear about your little girl, juliantrost. It is heartbreaking to see a little puppy suffer. I hope that both girls will get better.

The vet analysed the urine sample today. She has the infection for sure and I will take her in for antibiotics. She will start with 5 days of injectable antibiotics, because the vet explained that oral tablets may be too aggressive for her stomach. Will take another urine sample tomorrow. I will keep you guys posted.

Thank you very much for all your help. I was really frightened when I saw this behavior in her, she is my first dog so everything is very new for me.

I would suggest monitoring her water intake for a little while, too, so you have an idea of how much she's drinking & eliminating, both.

If you don't think she's drinking enough to really pee and flush the bladder... you can add some low-sodium chicken broth (or some other tasty liquid) to her water to get her to drink more. Maybe just during daylight hours when you're home and can get her outside more often.

For our cat, we added ~1/4 cup of water to her meals (each about 1/4 cup of kitty kibble), which forced her to consume more water. She's a water-a-holic, now (many years later)... but I'd rather scoop the box more often than have her get another UTI!

Oh that poor baby!!! I hope all goes well. It is hard to train w a UTI but consistency is key. :)

I am not really fixed on potty training her while she has this problem, we'll just progress at her pace. I can see that sometimes when we play indoors she pees because she can't really keep it in.

She is currently eating from a stuffed toy because she gulps her food way too fast. The last time I gave her the kibble soaked in water she ate it so fast that she threw up. Aside from this, her water intake seems to be ok, I change her water 3-4 times a day and everytime I find her bowl to be low on water. I have noticed that sometimes she squats and no pee comes out. This means that she should indeed drink more water. I'll put some chicken broth in there to make her drink it, thanks for the suggestion.

This morning, unfortunately I didn't manage to get any pee out of her :( She refused to pee when I went near her to collect it .... We'll see what the vet says, but I know that a sample while she is on antibiotics is no good.
I did manage to find powder cranberry supplements, yey :) Another pics with the little girl, just because she is adorable

Well, two days of antibiotics and she seems to be getting a little better.. She doesnt pee as often, but she still licks herself sometimes. I am guessing that she is still uncomfortable.

As for the potty training, we're trying. Yesterday I managed to have a poop free day in the house, but today didn't start as good :D However,we're not doing as good on the pee thing, but that was expected. We are still progressing..
However, what kinda makes me sad is that she doesn't enjoy going for walk. Her reward for going outside is to come back inside :( She does love it when people go near us, but they won't pet her.. They just ignore her, that's very weird. I want to get her socialized but it doesn't seem to be easy. Also, not a fan of going outside when it's dark.. I hope she'll grow to enjoy the walks. Atm, I am giving her treats every time she responds to me outside.

Good for both of you!!! I am sure the training will get easier when she is feeling better. She is at that age she is probably going thru another fear stage, regarding the walks and the dark. Just keep showing her it is okay and reward her for being "brave" lots and lots of treats, and loves. Do you have a Petsmart or somewhere like that around you? That would be good for socializing her

Thank you, RissyRenee. She seems to be on the right track :)

CR, thank you for the suggestion. I don't have a Petsmart, as I live in Europe, in a very non-dog friendly country. Basically dogs aren't allowed anywhere indoors, in public places. But I will take her to the park to meet the children, hope the moms wont freak out:p
We did make some progress last night, she played a lil bit with me in the dark. She chased me around for a while and she didn't seem as stressed. Also did a few commands.
We met a dog a well. My girl isn't dog friendly. Basically she isn't interested in dogs at all, won't even turn her head to see them. She goes right to the owner trying to give puppy kisses.
