Hello everyone. We picked up our puppy last week and 6 weeks he weighed about 8 pounds. When i took him to the vet a few days later he had roundworms so we treated it and he had diarrhea so i figured it was caused by the de wormer but it continued until yesterday when i took him back to the vet. He only weighed about a pound more so 9 pounds. Another feckile exam was done and it was determined that Coccidia was the cause of the diarrhea but the problem is he should be about 15 pounds by now but hes only 9. I guess my question is now that we are treating the coccidia do you think he will catch up on is weight like he should be.

Probably...puppy growth is an interesting thing....sometimes the smallest puppy in a litter turns out to be the biggest dog...and coccidia definitely can take its toll...have you spoken with the breeder...in my opinion, 6 weeks was a little too young for a breeder to be releasing pups, and with worms and coccidia no less....the breeder should be responsible for paying your vet bills...sorry you have to deal with this, but it sounds like you are taking good care of him...just keep doing what you're doing :)

yes i spoke to the breeder about it all his brothers and sisters are doing fine and weigh between 14-17 pounds. 6 weeks may have bin a bit young but thats to late to worry about now. I am just hoping that now that we are treating the coccidia he will start gaining the weight he should be.

Welcome Enzo's Dad! I used to live in Medina, moved out in '89.

I am feeding my EM pup both Diamond large breed puppy food and orijen large breed puppy. My EM LOVES the diamond food and turns his nose up at the Orijen, so I have to mix them up a bit. I got the Orijen off of advise given here, but I will be switching to Nutro once it runs out and will also keep the Diamond around since he loves it so much.

I also wouldn't worry about that low weight. He's been a very sick boy, he'll start puttin away the food like a champ once he's all better.

i wouldnt worry bout his weight to to much. i have a female english mastiff. at 6 weeks, she was also eight pounds. she is underweight by 12lbs according to the mastiff weight chart. she looks good for her weight though. i didnt worry because she gained a steady 6lbs per week. now she is 5 months and around 60lbs. she is the biggest female from her litter.

My Porter was 4.5 lbs at 8 weeks. Not even kidding. His dad was 220, mom 180. He's now almost 7 months old and a healthy 80 lbs. Just make sure you don't overfeed him trying make him grow faster.

What a cute puppy!! I have a bullmastiff that happened to be the very smallest in her litter.. She is now the biggest female and keeping pace with a few of the males. She is 7 months old and 92lbs. I bet when the treatment is done he makes up the difference quickly :)
