Way after her first heat. Mastiff should not be spay or neutered till 18 months to 2 years.

True! You leave yourself open to bone and joint problems when you spay early. It takes commitment to your dog's health to wait, AND, you'll take lots of flak from your vet because most of them want to get you in and get it done right away. They'll try to scare you about possible cancers that your dog could get, but several studies show the opposite is true. Most people here have waited. Heats aren't easy, clean up, etc., but balance it against your dog suffering and you paying for expensive surgeries and the math is clear.

I am definitely going to have a hard time with my vet about waiting that long. She wanted to spay Honey at 6 months. Also, the price doubles after 100 pounds and Honey gains ten pounds a month. How often will she go into heat? I am not really worried about the mess. I am more worried about her health and also the possibility of paying 1000 dollars to spay her. She is a good weight, about a five on the chart.

Generally they go into heat around 8-12 months and it lasts about 3 weeks.

You need to check around for pricing when the time comes to spay her because $1K to spay is quite high. Check with your local animal shelter, they usually offer low cost spaying as well as other organizations. The local animal shelter can refer you to those organizations and vets who offer low cost spay.

It is better to wait until after the 1st heat before spaying but it is optimal to wait until 18-24 months so she can benefit from the hormones.

If you wait to spay her, you must be a responsible owner and keep her away from male pups at ALL times. Males will be knocking at your door while she's in heat.

Bottom line, she is your pup and you need to do what is best for you and the pup. :)

Is it possible that Honey is in heat again? She is swollen, and turns her bottom to you, and she just let George mount her. George is neutered. We are trying to get her spayed.

Was she in heat in January, if yes, then not possible to be in heat again this soon? How old is Honey? As we previously posted, you should wait to spay her until 18-24 months so she can receive the benefits of her hormones for healthy growth.

You have to remember Vets are also in the business of making money, not just "helping" animals. The decision is yours to make. There are many factors. Doing your research before making your desicion is my best advice I could give. There are TONS of info about the topic here on these forums.

There is one thing that can't be denied, the longer you wait, the heavier the dog, the more costly the operation. I hope monetarily you are in a position to make your decision based on other factors. Not solely on your current savings account balance. Many people don't have the option, many dogs may suffer because of it.

That's not to say " If you ( blank) than this (outcome) will definitely be inevitable." There are too many variables for this to be the case.

Honey is lovely! Wait it out if you can unless there are medical complications. I will say that it seems most vets seem to be/are trained to see a one-size-fits-all approach. And as every female monkey on this forum knows from wearing pantyhose, no one size totally does not fit all.
