Mastiffs and hunting?

I live in the mountains and come across cougars, bears and other predator wild life while hiking and camping. One of Pans jobs once he is older is to keep those animals away, alert when they are around or chase them off while hiking. I plan on doing some tracking work with him as well. Unfortunately here it is illegal to use a dog to take down a deer, but cougar hunting is very popular. I would love to get into it, plan on going on a cougar hunt this winter, but I don't know if I would be willing to put Pan in the middle of a hound pack and chase a cougar down. But I bet he would love it once he is older.

Panzers half brother, same father works on a cattle ranch and one of his jobs is to kill and keep the coyotes away. And he does the job very well.

Jade has hunted gophers and attacked bears so it is in their nature. She is always tracking something when we are out in the wooded areas.

A friend of mine here in TX hunts wild hogs and had a bullmastiff along with his other hunting dogs. He said once he got the taste of blood that the dog wanted to attack everything. He eventually broke his chain and killed one of his other dogs and had to put him down. May have been a fluke thing but its worth noting for sure.

Woah. I dontw believe it was the whole "taste of blood" thing. My puppies (under ten months) killed possums in our back yard. They're all on a raw diet. Madelyne has been attacked by my dads Boxer too many times for comfort, and they have both drawn blood, and not once have I seen my girl attack any other dog. Plus, she cleans my "booboos". Haha
That's scary to think about though. Many factors there! O.O

Kona will kill anything that runs so far. Or crawls real slow like a turtle, or flies lie a buzzard. Thank god she aint caught none of our hawks or eagles. She will also tree anything and if she dont catch it, she will return to that tree every day for a damn week.

Hell last week she dove through our window to get the 3 danes next door. To bad there is a fence between the two properties.

Alejandro that just isn't true... hogs are fast smart and vicious.... the safest way is with dogs... in the south where the woods are thick they are almost exclusively tracked and held by dogs.. they are still extremely needed where you cant just snipe them off

I work at a convenience store on Sundays, as a favor for a friend, that is at the end of 1900 acreas of nature preserve here in FL. (I live at the other end of this road) We see hog parties meeting in the parking lot all the time. Their dog of choice here is black mouth curs. It could be because they're breeding their own stock, & curs come pretty cheap compared to CC or BB. It's a pretty low income area.

Most I know have cur for bay dogs then something with high prey drive and mass for the catch dogs. Lotta pit mixes in the catch game
