Manly breeds

I guess for me a "manly" dog is not only our big Mastiff type breeds but the bulldog too. As a woman; I only love the English Mastiff and people could not believe it when I would walk my boys back in the day... they were shocked at how sweet Moses or Otis could be. I have to say I have always wanted a bulldog - just cuz they look so funny and have interesting personalities... but maybe not mellow enough? I don't know....

It seems like labs are just too playful; they just don't fit the bill.

I agree with many on here that a lot more research needs to go into some of these articles on the net about any dog breed.

wtf? i LOVE pits! every one i have ever met was sweet. i think you really have to abuse a pit to make it vicious. i've met a lot of mean/snippy smaller dogs, and i'm wary of certain breeds (yes, i know, it's the owner and the training, but certain breeds do tend to have a tenancy toward aggressive behavior, and while many owners are nice, not all can offer the correct amount of dominance these breeds require). personally, i'm afraid of chows, bedlington terriers, and a lot of small breeds. i've never been afraid of a pit... EVER. then again, i don't think many people around here use the dogs for fighting, and the animal cruelty laws tend to be pretty strict.

and what's up with the husky and the lab being on the list? really? those are more suburban family dogs in my mind.

honestly, i LOVE mastiffs, but i've always sort of wanted an english bulldog (i say "sort of" because it's really mostly for superficial reasons. they're freaking adorable! i probably won't get one though. i can't imagine any breed being sweeter than em's.) i'd make him wear a bowler and name him winston... and call him "winnie" for short. english bulldogs are possibly the cutest breed (especially as puppies.)

BTW, if you have to get a certain dog to prove you're "manly" enough, chances are you're fighting a losing battle. get a dog becuase you want to love it and take care of it. get a dog for the companionship, or love of the breed. do NOT get a dog to impress the ladies. any lady who's only with you for your dog will eventually realize that she can just go out and buy one herself.

I think this is nuts. A list of manly dogs....REALLY....I judge a man on the man, not the dog he keeps. I am not a fan of little yappie kick me dogs, but they have their place in the world too. As for the list. Bull crap. A ridgeback is a breed that most people have NEVER heard of. And to disqualify pits is not right. I would look at a man with a pit before a dob. And because I grow up with German Sheppards I would put Sheppards at 1 or 2.
I really think it depends on what people grow up with. Im more inclined to notice a guy walking a Sheppard then another big dog because I know the breed.

I dont think any large breed is more manlyer then another, what I do find impressive is a strong breed that a man has full control and trust over. But my husband does get quite the attention when walking our CC, she's a chick magnet!!! LOL

Ok, gang , we have to make a list. no one out there knows more about this topic than the folks (oddly enough , mostly ladys) on this form. Seriously! Oh hey on the ladys thing. It has become more and more evident throught the years that ladys like the Corsos and Presas and Filas more than the men. Boy I am going to get it for this post. I can just feel it coming.:razzberry:

As a man I like bout all block head dogs. And the dopey ass fila. Probly cause I like hounds and dispite what some would say, most all filas have a houndy look to me. Not a fan of shepards, labs, or retrievers. Dont care for chows, dalmations, or most of the not so block head bigger dogs. I think males tend to lean to tougher looking dogs. Rotts, CC's, Pitt's, or what ever their other half want them to like. Men lean towards what they like. Be it a mini winier dog or Fila. Or they go for function.

Ok, I understand about 99 % of this list. But the lab?! Come on!! A lab on this list is like playing a child's game in highlights magazine called "what doesn't belong"?
