Koa pees on himself.... :/

Koa is almost 11 months old and is my first intact male dog. This week he suddenly learned to lift his leg to mark. I was pretty excited because now I finally have a dog that doesn’t pee like a girl. But for some reason, he keeps peeing on himself. He’ll lift his right rear leg, attempt to pee on a tree, but end up peeing on his front right leg and a little near his front chest by his neck. Is this a normal learning curve?

oh poor Koa. Maybe it is, he has to learn the right aim, maybe you should help him learn. I guess the male owners could give you better advice. These dogs are unique, I know Zeela likes to do her business in private. :p kind of like her owner. ha ha...

oh no lol I have two similar peeing stories. One has a hopeful end for you and the other does not.

1. My mom's tiny dog (Dakota) pees all over its own chest and stomach every time it pees (also a male dog). After a vet visit and inquiry early on the vet had to inform her that Dakota's penis was too small and I guess pointed up at his chest (and he has a giant barrel chest for such a tiny dog) so he basically can't pee without hitting himself directly in the chest. Four years later and Dakota still pees all over his chest every single time.

2. As a puppy Diesel used to be somehow be surprised when he would pee. He did the leg lift thing but he would get surprised or curious and twist to try to watch himself mid-stream... And by twist to watch himself I mean swing his head and face directly into his stream of pee and yes pee on himself.... He didn't care for it and eventually learned that he shouldn't try to watch himself pee anymore. It didn't take too long.

So my guess would be that if it isn't a physical issue like with Dakota he will probably learn that he doesn't care for peeing on himself and adjust his form.

yes ……..he'll get better aim ……. be thankful he's not peeing on your leg , yet ………….

LOL Marke! Diesel did this once. Just once. And not to me but to my husband. We were at a dog faire with him and taking a little break standing in the middle of a field before going to see what presentations or booths were about. So there were were standing in the middle of this field which was in the middle of this dog faire and Diesel suddenly stands up and lifts his leg and pees directly on Sean's leg. We had been talking so we didn't notice until the stream of pee started. But, it was clearly intentional on his part. My husband was so furious and I couldn't help but laugh because it was pretty hysterical. Diesel was on the receiving end of a pretty impressive angry yell from my husband and he never did try to do that again. I probably shouldn't have laughed... but it was pretty funny. Needless to say we had to call the day early so my husband could change out of his dog pee pants.

Otis used to fall over before he learned not to lean so far over or lift his leg so high. It was hysterical.

Oh that is a new one! I have never seen a dog fall over trying to pee. But I am quite certain if I was a male dog that would be me.

LOL! Ur stories are too funny! Koa is getting worse. Now he even pees on his chest when he’s going like a girl. In that situation I think what’s happening is he starts peeing but gets anxious and wants to start moving so pushes his hips forward as if he’s about to start walking. That little shift is enough to divert the pee up to his chest. ‍♂️

Koa falls down all the time but only when I’m petting him. He’ll start leaning and then just collapse with the grace of an elephant falling down a mountain.

Seiko still does not lift his leg and I am more than happy with that as it means my plants and such are safe because he can't reach the beds to pee on them. He doesn't hit his legs and to be fair he is surrounded by females (him and hubby being the only Y chromosomes in the household) so he doesn't really have any examples to learn from... and if Sequoia saw him doing anything she didn't like she would kick his ass anyway.

Our dog Cerberus was the same. He never once lifted his leg and it was nice not having to worry about anything other than the ground getting peed on.

I've had my leg or shoes peed on a few times ……….. peeing on stuff I've always found to be one of the downsides to a male dog

Jiggers used to unbalance himself when lifting his leg and would stagger while peeing until he figured out how high he could lift his leg. He never peed on himself that I can remember but Kryten did for a long time, usually the back of his front legs. He eventually figured out that he needed to lengthen his body instead of having his legs close together.
In terms of lifting a leg to pee I've discovered that it depends on the dog. Jiggers first lifted at 7 months old and I don't think he has peed with 4 feet on the ground since that first time. Kryten didn't start until after he was one and if he isn't marking and just has to pee he will semi squat and let loose, lifting his leg is only done when marking.
