Katie is getting spayed...

Tomorrow!! We have always had male dogs, she is our first female. Any suggestions, anything I should look out for or do to make her more comfortable? She likes to sleep in bed with us so that will be hard for her to have to sleep in her cage at night. She will probably have to wear "the cone of shame" as we are gone all day. I am working from home Monday to I can keep an eye on her...

Thanks!

If your dog is an EM make sure they know that they require lower amounts of anesthesia than most dogs. Other than that, they should provide some sort of pain pill and the rest is mostly keeping her comfortable and resting. In a few days she'll be running around like normal.

I see you already have this booked for tomorrow, but for any others reading this post...a spay via laproscopic surgery is a wonderful option for large/giant breed dogs. A very small incision is done as opposed to the typical spay surgery, with a much faster healing time :)

No food/water after 9pm tonight for your girl.

Good luck!

How do you go about making sure the vet knows about the amount of anesthesia without offending him? Lillie is 16 months and I want to have her spayed soon and don't want anything bad to happen to her. I can take her to a spay and neuter clinic for about $50. or take her to my vet for $199. price difference is huge but her well being is more important to me.

I wouldn't worry about offending them, they should understand your concern for your dogs well being. I lost a dog to anesthesia once and it is horrible. I would tell the vet you had read that the breed has different needs for anesthesia and see what they say.

I asked my vet if they spayed any English Mastiff's and I brought up the point that they are very sensitive to the anestesia. Most vets will not be offended and it's worth asking just to be safe. My female will be getting spayed soon as well and you bet I'll ask my vet yet again! Good luck, hope she does well and recovers quickly.

You should wait at least 1 to even 2 years to allow them to fully mature into their size

Mine is going on 8 months. I do not know if there is a "perfect" age however, I am having mine done at 8 months.

It is best to wait as long as possible, if you can with a large breed but in some cases it isn't possible. Some breeders require the dogs fixed before a certain time and others are more flexible provided they think you are able to deal with an intact mastiff for a heat cycle or 2.
