Kahlua nervous about the move

We have been in full on packing mode at home and our home has quickly become box central. Diesel is taking it all in stride and is occasionally curious about whether there may be toys in any of the boxes for him but otherwise is unaffected. Our cat BrrBeary seems to think it is the most awesome fun thing ever. So much fun that I have had to put him in Kahlua's crate a couple times to get him out of the way.

But, Kahlua is not at all happy about the change. She is a nervous wreck. She doesn't want to eat (and usually she is a big big eater). Now she looks at the food and looks at me and even after I release her and tell her to eat she looks at me like she thinks she will get in trouble. I have to stay with her and be supportive and then she eats.

We don't even need to use the gates or crate right now (for her) because she just stays still in one spot as we go about packing and looks around nervously.

And then last night at bed time she glued herself to me. She wrapped her legs around my body tightly and slept with her face pressed against mine all night. When I rolled over she snuggled up closer to me again and hugged tighter with her legs and when she did fall asleep there was plenty of twitching and then suckling noises. She seemed happiest when I hugged her back.

Kahlua just doesn't like change. She has never had a bad experience in her life. She came from a happy family home as a puppy into our home and has been pampered and adored her whole life. She just is always apprehensive of anything new or different. She doesn't like change. I keep telling her that she is really going to like this change once we arrive but for now she is nervous and unhappy. My poor girl. I understand though. I can be the same. Change is hard.

Nik, what about asking your vet for some Composure Pro during this transition period? Couldn't hurt. Explain everything and see if they have any other suggestions?

We leave so soon that I'm not sure we will be able to get in time. In any case she seems to be doing okay so long as I am sensitive to her. I feel bad that she is stressing but it also doesn't seem to be beyond worry and stress (no shaking, hyperventilating, panic attacks etc.).

She seems like she's very smart. Intuitive... And y'all are probably a bit stressed with the move, and she's picking up on it. I'm sure she will settle once y'all start settling in. Sweet girl...

I am sure she will be fine, she is with you. Just give her lots of loving and reassurance. It is stressful for everyone. all will be okay, one step at a time.

If you do decide she needs a little something, Composure Pro just helps take the edge off a bit when stressful things are going on. Your vet should have it in the office. Or you can order regular Composure from Amazon without a prescription. It's just not quite as strong. Or Benadryl, if it doesn't make her hyper. Melatonin can help too. Moving is stressful on everyone. Just some ideas in case you need them.

Good point about picking up my nerves. Maybe I'm the one that needs to take something. I am absolutely a stress case right now. :p

We actually get the truck tomorrow and once it is all filled we will be on our way. I expect it to take two days to fill. So hopefully soon enough Kahlua and I will both get to relax a bit. Thank goodness are boys (husband and Diesel and BrrBeary) are far calmer than we are. I think our family can only handle two major stress cases. :)

The only thing close to this happened during thunderstorms here in our county: my former black lab, Ebony, would jump up on our bed and shiver in fear, quite concerned about all the racket. Fireworks also got her attention. Dogs are amazing, aren't they?? The intuition April mentioned...something else.

How's it going, Nik?

We arrived Saturday at 2:30 am! It took 16 hours to make the 10 hour drives because we had to make lots of stops. The dogs were actually very well behaved the entire time but the final two hours were rough on Diesel. Kahlua slept through it and was quiet and great the entire time except that she did refuse to eat (still not eating like normal actually).

Diesel started getting very anxious about two hours before the end. At one point he started to try to climb forward but I put my arm across the two seats and then he just laid his head on my arm as he tried to keep his eyes open and stay awake. His head kept bobbing down and then he would jerk awake again. It was very stressful for him and he just wanted to go home.

Yesterday we spent all day unloading and gave the dogs many hours of play time in the yard both with us and without. They love the yard. They didn't love not sleeping in bed with us (we were camping style while my mom and Sean's dad was here helping us unpack).

This morning I got my internet up and going and did some grocery shopping. My husband started the drive back to califnornia today to return the truck and to take my mom home. So I am now logged in for work and will be alone with the dogs and Brr Bear for the next two weeks approximately. Tonight the dogs will sleep with me again in our bed and they will be happy about that although Sean being gone will make them anxious I'm sure.

I do hope Kahlua finds her appetite again soon. The not eating has me worried. I imagine when the house starts feeling like home she will probably start eating again. The yard though has her soooo happy. She runs and runs and has a circle of flowers she likes to lay in. I am betting in a few weeks when everything is set up and in place both dogs are going to be in absolute heaven. :)

In other news our new neighbors are incredibly nice and this is not something I have any experience with. One neighbor brought us a bunch of eggs from their chicken yesterday. Another neighbor helped us physically unload and put heavy furniture into place. We had four different neighbors come by to greet us. And apparently they all knew we were from California but they were very nice about it. There's another neighbor around the corner from us who waves to me every time I pass him in my car either leaving or coming into the neighborhood. It is a very different experience than all my past neighbor interactions and it is a nice welcome surprise. :)

That was a great update! I think you're all going to be very happy there. Friendly neighbors are the best and really make things feel like home. Looking forward to pictures of the dogs enjoying their new yard.

Even though i have my office all set up I am working from the master today because the dogs were acting very needy. As soon as I sat on the couch to do some work Kahlua jumped up and glued herself to me. Diesel watched from our bed and they both seem the happiest inside the house that they have been so far. I guess they just needed a little cuddle time to help them cope with the newness.

I will try to send a few pics over a little later today from their time in the backyard over the weekend.

That's great, you and your family have started a new adventure.... And sounds like in a wonderful neighbourhood as well! Moving is very stressful. I'm sure your fur babies will settle in soon enough. Oh and congratulations on the new place!

Okay here are a few pictures. I haven't taken many yet because all the craziness of moving and the insanely long drive. But, this is what we have for now. I am sure I will take loads more as we settle.

There were many beautiful views along the drive. At this particular stop there was a spectacular view from the dog potty area in a rest stop.

The dogs took to the large yard right away. They have been running, playing and rolling around in the grass like crazy things.

Here is Diesel rolling in the grass. I think he likes his new yard.

And here is Kahlua rolling in the grass doing weird peanut curl rolls.

And of course a lot of running and playing...

Eventually they do get tired and then they enjoy lounging in the grass.

Beautiful pictures. They look so happy!! I love the pic of them running and Diesel's ears are flapping in the wind. So happy for y'all. It's great that your neighbors are friendly and welcoming.
