Is there anyone out there that can give thier opinion right now? Annual Shots.

Life has been absolutely crazy (In a good way) recently and I haven't been on but Ruger has his appointment with the vet this morning (I am SO not looking forward to it) and I had scheduled him for his Rabie shot and his bloodwork, I recieved a card int he mail yesterday listing everything THEY had him scheduled for and it is EVERYTHING. Rabie, Bloodwork, fecal exam, Bordatella, Distemper and Parvo.

As far as the Bordatella goes, I expected that and always just tell them now but I am surprised about the rest of the list. Is this neccessary? I was thinking that the only thing he should need is the bloodtest and the Rabie....Are they just trying to over vaccinate and make money or is it me?

Hope fully someone can chime in as I waited until the lat minute and now have to leave in less than 15 minutes.

You prob have no choice with the rabies..state law stuff....as for the rest of it, I would have a titer done first before I slammed him with all that stuff he might not need at this time

Kris...If it was me I would do the rabies and the fecal...They are doing the blood anyway, so have a titer done to see if he really needs all the other

As far as I know, the parvo/distemper shot is either 1 or 2 years of effectiveness. Your vet would know which one he gave. I thought they were core vaccines.

It isn't really about the cost so much as it is the fear of over vaccinating him....Maybe it has just been so long since I had a dog before Ruger, I am not thinking right. I had it in my mind that he should just need his check up, blood work and rabie.

Okay. I only said that because she mentioned the vet trying to get more $$ out of her. I remember Ruth saying that she gets the titer done. Hopefully I am recalling that correctly!

I believe your thinking is exactly right on track Kris; do what you are comfortable with today...you can always go back for the other vaccinations if you change your mind

I think one reason these shots are yearly are because the virus mutates, just like influenza in humans.

The titer is as much as the vaccinations in most cases but saves you from over vaccination. I would have rabies, bloodwork and fecal done ...with a titer on the bloodwork.

As for how long vaccinations last. I need to find the articles, but often times puppy booster shots will last for the life of the dog. Yearly vaccination is an archaic practice that has been repeatedly proven not necessary. You do need to know that your dog is covered tho and to be able to prove that for any obedience or boarding. A titer will cover that to show he has appropriate antibody levels.

Rabies is required by law. Do the fecal.

Titer for the rest of it if money's not an issue. IT IS fairly standard to do a 1yr booster for the rest, but the chances of him actually NEEDING it is fairly small. Neither of mine did for example. I'll do a longer post later if you need it.
