  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Is it possible...????

I am starting to think that Sadie is intolerant to all kibble. She had diarrhea for 10 days even on rice and boiled hamburger. I added in Slippery Elm and that seemed to help. She had solid stool for two days and I started to add in kibble and now she has diarrhea again. I am seriously thinking about going raw now, but my question is....should I feed the 80/10/10 even with her kidney issues or do I need to amend the meats, bones and organs? I am just sick and tired of the diarrhea and I can not imagine how Sadie feels:(. Any help from you raw feeders on the kidney issues would be helpful.

I would suggest using the 80/10/10. Hold off on organ meats for about 2 weeks and then slowly add to the diet. Be sure she eats meaty bone with the organ meats to prevent diarrhea.

Of all that I've read about raw, it does nothing but help the dog, event those with health issues.

I haven't used it yet but I have a thread on Big Dog Natural that might be worth checking into for raw. I will definately be going that route soon.

Its entirely possible that her issue is something in the usual set of preservitives or vitamins that get added to even the best kibbles. She wouldn't be the first dog.

Mind, starting her on raw might result in diarrhea at first too. But it should clear up fairly quickly. But yes, go with the 80-10-10 and adjust as needed (she might need a hair less organs for example). But Musicdeb is right, don't do organs right away.

Yup, thats a good site. Mind, don't feel tied to their timeline. If she's got solid poo on 10% bone 4 days in then go ahead and start the next step a couple days later. If you're still not happy with her digestion by week 3 drag out that first step a bit.

Thanks. I will look for a freezer today, and a butcher. Should I fast her for 12 or 24 hours before starting? She will turn 1 on Monday!!!

Oh, I know part of your reluctance was that you travel. I vaugely recall someone talking about having a portable freezer that pluged into a car. I'll see if I can find a link.

If I just bring a cooler dedicated to her food with ice I should be ok. The longest we will be away is three days, so it should be ok in a cooler, right?

I didn't fast Titan. I took him off kibble and started raw the next. He did get diarrhea the first 2 days but adjusted rather quickly. The reason he got diarrhea that I gave him chicken livers right from the start and then found out that was wrong.

When I took Titan to FL on a road trip, I froze all of his food and placed it in a cooler with the dry ice. It stayed frozen until we arrived in Fl 18 hrs later.

Oh, missed the question on fasting. I'd not bother with more than 12hrs. Feed her supper, and start raw for breakfast.

I'm down to google TV, it is a joke to post or do research on but I think there is a yahoo group on raw feeding and kidney problems. I've heard good things.

Also, when traveling, you can stop at any grocery store and get food. It will become very simple once you have done it for a week or two.

I had an appointment with the vet this afternoon to do a follow up on the findings from the ultrasound. I told her that Sadie has diarrhea again and that I have decided to go raw. She was somewhat supportive, but she argued that the meats better be fresh, i.e the animal should have been walking within the past 12 hours or the risk for bacteria growth is high!!?? We argued a little bit and before I left she asked me to REALY think about feeding raw. I told her that I have been thinking about it for a long time and I am starting tomorrow!!

Generally, most vets do not support raw diets because they are paid by the dog food companies to sell their products. Of course, the meat will be fresh. What does she think you're a complete idiot??? Really not surprised that she made the raw diet sound like the kiss of death.
