Today, I want to discuss a topic that I (and every other dog trainer I know!) get lots of questions about. Are “Invisible Fence”-type containment systems a good idea, generally speaking? I think they work fine for dogs that are sensitive enough to "listen" to the collars.

I have known prey-driven dogs that get locked OUT of their yard, so that's not a good thing... they were willing to risk the ZAP to chase a varmint across the boundary, but once the varmint was gone, not willing to risk a ZAP to get back home.

One thing they do NOT do, that I do require for my home... is keep others OUT of my yard. I prefer a hardware fence to protect my property from interlopers of the human variety... or at least slow them down. And, also keep roaming loose dogs off my property, especially where a protective dog might take offense - and end up hurting an otherwise innocent dog just out on a joy-ride.

So... I'm not against them, just wouldn't have one.
