Hello everybody!! My name is Stacey and Im new to the Mastiff Forum. I have a 5 1/2 month old English Mastiff named Droid! He is a remarkable puppy! And we Love him very much! Our little baby developed a cyst/mass looking thing on his back about a month ago. When I took him to the vet for his shots, she told me that it was probably bening and should probably fall off in a couple weeks, but it hasnt. Now he is rubbing on it and making it bleed and licking and chewing on it! We dont have the money to take him in and have it cut off. Does anyone know anything about this or has experienced it themselves? We just want the stupid thing gone and our puppy comfortable again! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

if he is biting and rubbing it that means its bothering him. you have to take him to the vet. large breed dogs and just dogs in general are expensive but imagine if that cyst was on you - wouldnt you go to the doctor??

hope that he is ok, keep us updated.

Poor pup, It seems like its bothering him and might need to be cut out. Have you asked the vet about payment plan for the cost?

I asked the vet that we take him to, about payment arrangements and they dont have payment plans there! So I guess I should try to find him someone new! I know he's uncomfortable with it and that it is bothering him! I feel terrible for him! I just didnt know if there was something we could buy over the counter to help it???? Lord knows, I wish I had the money to just take him and have it done, but unfortunately we dont!!:(

I would search around for a good vet that does payment plans. I remember our Em had a cyst on her back that actually ruptured and she needed to get stitches right away, that was expensive. You dont want to get into a situation where he needs vet care right away and don't know a vet that will do a payment plan.

i would definately look around for a different vet and check on prices. sometimes it is not that expensive depending where you live. i used to have a boxer mix that had exactly what you are talking bout but on his head. the vet had to put him under and remove it and put stitches in. it only cost me $20. i live in indiana.

tip: to get him to stop messing with it, mix vaseline and hot sauce and put it on him. this is a trick you do when you get a male dog neutered as well. it may sting for the first couple minutes but thats it. once he licks that spot, he shouldnt lick it again or bite it or anything. although i did this with a lab i had after he got neutered and the darn thing still licked it.

my dane had a growth as pup, luckily his did in fact go away after several weeks but he didn't really bother it either, if he's really irritating it maybe the vet has something topical he could suggest to try first. I know you mentioned not having the money...just a suggestion...you might want to start putting a little cash aside each week, even if it's just $10 for when stuff like this might come up, or even if you plan to get him neutered. Dogs in general are expensive to keep but the giant breeds are even more costly since everything is quadrupled due to their size.

Thank You every one for the advice. Im certainly going to be calling around tomorrow to see if I can find him a new Vet. And I think i will be trying the hot sauce and vaseline trick and see if that works. I will keep y'all posted!!

Our Boxer had a cyst on his ear, we left it being told it would go away. It didn't, it ruptured and cost us 800$ to have removed. Your best bet is to find a vet that will do payment plans or one that you can apply for a vet line of credit with.
The trouble with large breeds is the money you spend buying them is nothing compare to the cost of veterinary care.
After this is over I recommend looking into health insurance for your dog. We got ours, is unlimited lifetime coverage and is roughly 50$ a month.
I figure as a large breed, if I pay out 6000$ in ten years, that is one TPLO surgery. Is an option if funds are tight, well if they are not as well. It makes sense.

I agree with Cody, look into insurance for the dog, it's usually affordable and for me is a big reassurance as well.
