I don't see as many black mask DDB's in the U.S. as overseas's. Any Reason?

Just wondering why they don't seem as popular here. I have not decided if I like the look as much or not. What are your thoughts?

Yes it looks like the markings on a fawn colored English Mastiff. The mouth and nose are mostly black. If you look at the non U.S. breeders websites you will see some. Also you can go to "google images" and search Black mask Dogue De bordeaux and see all the images you want! Other than the mask all the markings are the same!

For a long time the black mask was considered less desirable I remember years ago when I had my first Dogue before they were AKC the old standard standard said something like black masks were less desirable because people believed they were due to crossing to bullmastiff or EM.

I personally don't care for the black masks all that much...just my personal preference.

I had seen pictures (there was a thread here a long time ago about DDB masks and I tracked down pics of all I could find listed) but my understanding was that they were very uncommon now - much more so than the red or brown masks. I like the look though of course I can see answering a lot of questions as to lineage. No idea what's driving the divide between countries other than pure popular opinion.

If you want a black mask DDB why not just get a bull mastiff? Not being sarcastic-seriously asking your thoughts.

I know BM's and DDB's are similar...but dont they also have some main differences? Not just in looks, but in personality? What you are asking is purely about looks and not about temperament or general personality. I suppose if someone was looking for a mastiff based purely on looks and a black mask was something they HAD to have, they should go with a BM or an EM as a black masked DDB is pretty rare.

But I'd think (hope) most people are also looking for a certain personality in their dog...and the DDB is very attractive in that way...well you know...you have one :p but say someone wants the DDB personality...and also loves the black mask... then I guess they'd find themselves a DDB with a black mask.

Kind of like I think an Isabella colored dogue is gorgeous and would jump at the chance to own one. But just because I like that color doesn't mean I want a different breed that is more commonly colored that way...I'd still want a DDB cause they're awesome.

I agree with there being other differences between the DDB and the Bullmastiff. I think most imporantly you need to choose a breed that is suited for what you expect out of your dog. I think bullmastiff's are a little more territorial and a little more aggressive. DDB's fit more into what I would like to do with my dogs. I'm about equal between the black/brown/red masks, I think they are all beautiful. It's hard to make that big wrinkly head look bad!!haha

We just adopted a black masked dogue de bordeaux last month and we think he is beautiful:) his sister was all red with no black on her face but it was something about George's sweet face that made us want to take him home:)image.jpg

I appreciate a good quality black mask DDB my first one was a black mask, but there are some out there that look like poor quality Bull Mastiffs. Just my opinion.

Could just be my DdB, but I find DdB to be a bit more serious in temperament than a bullmastiff. I've always found BM to be fairly silly (in many ways similar to boxers in temperament) and big puppies while the DdB is more serious and observant.
