Human fear

Ok, I have this rescue from a puppy mill. She is a year and 3 months old. A cane corso. She loves me and my husband very much although at times very timid. She is walking good on a leash, although any human being around her she will look right at them and await a look back and she would lash out barking, growling and hackles up. This happened when I took her into the vets. I didn't feel sorry for her and also didn't give a harsh correction, instead I would give her a little poke at her hind end and say nothing. This distracted her. I then just walked around and just let her see people. Other dogs and animals were not a problem it was the human variety. She settled in with just a few growls after about an hour. I have also been walking her in high traffic areas with a lot of people. I won't let people touch her, just give her a treat on the ground beside her. I won't let them look right at her nor will I let them talk to her. She seems to be getting better. She doesn't know people at all. The trust is not there. If anyone has suggestions that would be great!!!! She is a beautiful girl that needs help and hopefully a new forever home.

I think it's going to just take time and a lot of patience. I think what you're doing right now is a step in the right direction.

My cane corso is the same way. He was abused at a young age. Keep trying! My vet said it may take years. Good luck!

Well an update on this little girl. She has been spayed, ear infections gone and major socialization. She is doing much better and at times wants to trust to the point of actually going up to people, but is still unsure of herself. This I know will come in time. She is very smart, eager to learn, very high prey drive, so she will not do well with cats or other small animals. She loves her new pack and gets along well with everyone. She is the type of girl that does not like a stern voice and is terrified of any rake, shovel, broom or anything in my hand. So now we are walking with a rake, a broom and the shovel....people think I am nuts! Oh and one more update. My husband and I have decided we are keeping this beautiful little girl. I just can't let her go knowing that she may not go into the right hands. Thanks for all the encouragement and one day I will figure out how to post a pic. Anyone who is wanting to do rescue and has the time, I definately encourage it. Although it is time consuming and costly, in the end it is worth it, as I am learning a lot!!

Congrats BettyBoop, I agree on the whole rescue thing. I've learned so much more than i would hve if my dogs were completely stable, happygolucky when I got them. One is now, and the other is getting there, not sure if she ever will be, as I dont believe it's in the mastiff's nature to just "give it away".
