Human DNA Tests - And a Review of the One I Took

Okay so I posted about how fun doing Diesel's DNA test was and the cool results I got.

I also submitted a human DNA test for myself at the exact same time. We both cheek swabbed on the same day and everything. Fair is fair afterall.

As it turns out I am much more of a mutt then my Diesel is.

The company I went with for my DNA test was called "GPS Origins". My dad had done "23 and me" several months prior and I was very disappointed in his results because of how vague they were.

GPS Origins had a lot more detail in the results than 23 and me did. I got a complete breakdown by percent of each ethnicity. It also pinpoints the origin of both your maternal and paternal lines with the first three locations of those lines going back prior to 500 AD. And when I say origin I mean exact origin with longitude and latitude coordinates. Which I found super cool and fascinating. And there were most definitely some big surprises in mine.

Will follow up with more details shortly (it is another conference day for me).

That's pretty awesome. Exact coordinates?! That's much more than I'd ever expect from any DNA test!

So here is my maternal and paternal migration path. You can zoom in and they also provide the exact coordinates. The blue is my paternal line (because I know we are Italian on that side).

You cant tell from the zoomed out view but the coordinates of the first point of origin on my mom's side is this tiny island off of estonia (it is actually closer to Sweden then Estonia).

So the origin stuff is really cool but then of course you also get a complete genetic breakdown from them and they give you history of each region and the time period that your family originated in that region as well.

WOW! So impressed. Ye Hah! What, no North American princess in the broth? Well....who knows, maybe I'm all European DNA too! Ooh, but I want to try it....How Much, How Much? How Many dollars? Let's See if they can get me, the Heinz '57 right! I know a lot of my paternal heritage back to the 1560's or thereabout...looked it up a few years ago, but...my paternal grandma...? Roll the dice on that one. And my mom...pure boring Irish from the Cork area of Southern Ireland. I am indoctrinated: I still sing the songs. That's four generations deep, Baby! The Irish is One Tough Gene to Break!

So my big surprise was about 12% Indian

I also showed 5% north american

But mostly i am a split between north and south Europe. I have no clue where the Indian came in though. I did know there was native american and thought there would be more based on family stories.

Oh i also had the teensiest bit of african (less then 1%) and the teensiest amount of arab (also less then 1%)

I was shocked by the finland and russian which i have quite a bit of... i do not look even a little scandanavian or nordic but my beautiful barbie doll replica sister certainly does.

We had family rumors of dutch - there was none

We had family rumors of scottish and irish - also none despite all the freckles in the family

Oh i should mention the migration path they provide does not account for your full lineage just the first three spots in each line which is why you can have odd ball stuff also mixed in.
