How much food do you go through in a month?

Hello Everyone! I'm new around these parts but I do have a Presa/food question for you all. I am supposed to be getting a Presa puppy in Spring assuming that the breeding will take. So I am trying to gauge about how much food I will be going through. I currently have 3 dogs: a 35lbs 13 year old German Pinscher, a 15lbs 10 year old Rat Terrier, & a 70lbs 5 year old Boxer mix. A 40lbs bag of dog food will last me about 4.5 - 5 weeks. So with an adult Presa, how long does a 40lbs bag of dog food normally last you? I know that it varies from dog to dog & also it will depend on the type of food you feed as well. I'm just looking for a roundabout figure...how long does YOUR 40lbs bag of dog food lasts you with your Presa? I'm starting to think that I will be going through two 40lbs bags of dog food each month. Thanks in advance for your time!

I would agree with you on the amount of food. I have two EM puppies (10 months old) and we go through a 28 lb bag every two weeks...with that time frame getting closer and closer. They are 80 lbs and 86 lbs and I feed a high quality food, Earthborn Holistics, so they are only getting 3 - 3 1/2 cups a day...much less than on some other foods. They are maintaining about a 4 - 8 lb weight gain a month.

I recently did the math for switching my pups to dry kibble for the holidays(we raw feed). Adding up my dogs weight to about 215lbs and feeing earthborn holistic a 28lb bag would last us about 12 days. Seemed crazy to me but remember this is just in theory and I have not started feeding them the kibble yet. I used a calculator on the Internet to help come up with an estimate. You will need the weight of the dog, how active it is and the kcal of the food you will be feeding.

Yeah, that's what I am thinking too - 1 bag for the Presa & 1 bag for the others each month. ;-)

Yeah, it's hard to say but I am starting to think 1 bag a month for my potential Presa. I used to feed raw when I was actively competing in conformation with my German Pinscher. I loved feeding raw...my dog's teeth looked GREAT & he was never sick. Unfortunately, I will have to resort to dry kibble for the time being. I do plan on going back to raw feeding in the future.

I have 2 dogs (200 lb EM and a 70 lbs Irish Setter x). They go thru 3-4 25lb bags a month. A bag tends to last 8-9 days depending on how much Kryten chooses to eat each day, he skips meals periodically.

We have one just the one 10 month old EM, and he goes through around 1 28 Lb bag / week, so around 100 lbs + /month.

Holy moly..that seems like a lot of food yea?
Just checked with my Wife. It is 4 28 Lb. Bags in 5 weeks on an overall average. If that is a lot, keep in mind he is our first dog in a lot of years. Compared to what?

I meant, we don't have a baseline to judge from.

Sorry Bob! I didn't mean anything by it...I just thought man am I under feeding or need to rethink my calculations haha. Oscar is my first since the dogs I grew up with as a kid...so I'm clearly no expert :). I feed 8-9 cups a day...so 60lbs or so in 4ish week...I think as long as body condition is good and doing well..go with it!

It's been quite some time but I believe I was buying 50 lbs of food every two weeks with my last EM. Sounds so crazy when you say it but totally normal for us all when we are at the store buying it. Kwim? Hahahaha

Did you ever consider feeding raw? You have plenty of time now to do your research before you get your pup. Your Presa and the other dogs would certainly love it.

After doing the math we are most definitely saving money feeding raw. Just more time consuming.

I have fed raw when I was actively showing my German Pinscher in conformation almost 10 years ago. I know what to do but, alas, I don't have room for that in my life right now. It is time consuming because I used to separate portions into glad lock bags & such.

I currently feed a good quality kibble. I may feed raw again, just not right now.

I think I was over feeding my pup tho he doesn't look fat at all. He was going through 34lbs about every 3 weeks. I have cut him down. I was giving 3 to 4 cups for breakfast and dinner. I have cut him down to 2 cups for breakfast and 2 for dinner. He has slimmed out some, but definitely not thin. IDK. I am worried I am not feeding him right lol. He always wants more food. My Chi free feeds.

What brand of food are you feeding him and what are the package directions based on his weight? My girls will not ever turn down food, but I feed them based on the EBH bag schedule and their poops. As long as the poops are nicely shaped then they get the same amount of food. When they gain weight into the next feeding amount I will bump it up a little and see what happens to the poop. If it's very loose then we go right back to the previous amount for a few weeks and try to up it again. That's my strategy.

Remember that a high quality dog food requires less for them to be fed as they get more nutrients then a lower quality food.
