  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

HeavyHauler & Ares.

LOL! Well to be fair I do breed them. My two oldest, are retired/pets so I have 3 that are active in my program at the moment. How many meals are you feeding the little guy at the moment?

My dogs aren't fussy, they eat pretty much anything you offer them so makes life easier for training. When we are going to the show ring we try to use stuff like heart, liver, etc baked in some garlic powder for some flavor. We have use hotdogs, cut up cheese, baked organs cut up, even cheerios at one point.

I live in a small town as well, but am fortunate that there is a city with several food supply stores about 1/2 hour away that carry a good supply. You might want to look into some of the distrubutors that ships foods to your door might be an option for you as well.

Here are some I found on a quick search:

We have fed raw in the past as well as several different types of kibble sometimes different ones at different times to make sure that everyone is on the food that meets their needs. Currently we are feeding a food called ProSeries made locally as we were having an issue with our dogs keeping weight on with regular grain-free kibbles, so we optied to try a food with some grains and a higher fat content and finally are getting some results.

What type of work are you looking to do with Ares?

We always start of positively with pups, and reward with what works for those pups, some are good with just praise some work better for food. Just depends on the individual dog. There is no cookie cutter way to do it, if your way is working then stick with it. If something comes up and you just aren't getting the desired result then switch it up to try something else.

Good morning, I have put Ares on BullyMax (2 1/4 cups-each meal) for 2 meals a day.

Also on a Total Health supplement, twice a day; for 3 weeks. On the bag, it says to double dose, for the first three weeks.

For treats, I ordered some from Pet Only. Thank you, for the suggestion.

I cut these cubes into smaller pieces for him and we use them for new commands, as well as multi-command training (sit/stay)

As well as these; we use these for basic commands that he has done 100%, which is a good majority of them so far.

I also got him a few chew toys and rope toys;

http://www.petonly.ca/nylabone-puppy-chew-twin-pack-dog-toy (Same brand, different two pack bones-bought it at Walmart)
And two other Kong bones that I bought at Walmart, one is blue-with treat holders and the other is red and bumpy.

I also ordered him a bungee leash, a collar and a molle harness (I use molle gear myself, so it will be good for Ares to have his own pack system)

Right now, we're working on basic commands; hoping to train him to the point where all I need to do is say the command once, and he does it immediately. So far he can sit/stay (we're working more on stay), get it/drop it/leave it, inside/outside, paw (shake paw). Also working on something to let us know he needs to go outside, not really sure how to go about that. We've been doing a lot of on-leash training and going for walks, he's doing a lot better with it and he'll also follow us, trailing his leash behind him. He also knows heel pretty well.

He also has been doing very well, house training. We take him out when I get home from work (6am) and then a half hour or so after he eats/drinks, then an hour or so later, and keep doing that until his second meal, then the same until I go to work (6pm) and then she takes over and brings him out every hour until 11pm. Then he is kept in the hallway, where baby gates are strategically placed in all of the bedroom doors.

I'm looking to train him as a guard dog, for my family while I'm away at work each night. I also want to do sledge pulling with him as well. I also ordered one of them clickers from Pet Only and we've been using that and treats for him to do commands. He will do any command with/without a treat, so that's very helpful.

Thank you for the advice, I greatly appreciate it.

What kind of training do you do with your dogs?

Have you looked up or seen belly training in regards to a way to alert you when he needs to go out? That might work and I think there are videos you can see online of how to train it.

I can't remember which videos were recommended so you will have to weed through and likely try a couple to see what works for you, but essentially you hang bells (or something that makes noise loud enough to be heard easily) on the door and teach them to ring them when they need to go out.
