Hi -
Our Hanky just turned 1 (today as a matter of fact), LOVES LOVES LOVES people, but when we go out for walks, he goes absolutely NUTS when he sees other dogs. I am not really sure what happened, and can't pin down exactly what started it.
We would go to the dog park, and he would play, and everything was fine. Then one day, while out on a walk, a dog started barking at him, and it was everything that I had in me to hold him back. We have tried working with a trainer, and she gave us a few tips, and he is less aggressive, but since he weighs 160 pounds, well needless to say we love him very much, and would hate to have to put him down if he hurt/killed another dog, so we don't want to take the risk to see if it is just a leash aggression by going back to the dog park, or even not having him tied up at all times.
There was a time that a dog came into our yard, Hank was tied up. The dog came up to Hank, and they started the sniffing process. My husband called him back, hank did not respond, the other dog came closer to my husband at the same time my husband grabbed Hank's collar to pull him back,
and Hank attacked. He pinned the other dog, and had him by the throat. Well, after all was said and done, the other dog WAS NOT injured in any way, there was no blood, but I am scared. I think part of it was protective/territorial, but I am not experienced in any way to make that call. But since then, like I said we have worked with a trainer and it is better, but still there.
I guess I am wondering if this is going to be a forever problem, or just take more time...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.....

OMG! That is exactly like my dog! I am in fear of another small, or for that matter any dog, will come around and I wont have the strength to hold my dog back! I read a post from a woman that had an english mastiff, her dog literally took a small dog from out of a man's hands and killed it right there! I am in the process of seeing what I can do about this dog aggression thing. Any advice would be very helpful.

I have had a lot of success with the halti lead. If it is used properly by loopin your leash to the dogs collar and then the clip to the bottom ring of the halti. If it is used this way the dog can either make the decision basically from your guidance to either listen to you by putting pressure on his collar and if that does not work then by the halti. Never jerk the halti lead, gently lead the dogs stare away from the other dog that he is trying to focus on and if it means turning around and walking the other way and then turning back for another approach, if it takes several times, you are ultimately showing the dog you are the leader of the situation. Don't let him paw or scratch at his face either to get the halti off, keep him moving. I use this on my Cane Corso who is 160 lbs. I don't have to have any strength to control the dog. You break the intense stare that they want to go into the drive. Good luck. ps....don't let him off leash in a park and I would strongly suggest to exercise regularly in several different places to "test" him.
