  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Gross picture? Warning

She is 11 months old so we are waiting for her first heat. She has a history of UTIs so I’m always paranoid about that, but she doesn’t have any other symptoms. She has a vet appointment on Friday so I will also ask the vet.

Hmmm. I'd keep my eye on it. Are you wiping her after she goes? Ella has discharge and is very recessed. Usually for us the discharge means that she's going to have a bout of vaginitis and probably a UTI. Lettie is pretty recessed too. It sucks.

Ugh, I will start wiping her again. For awhile she seemed to be doing better about keeping herself clean. I also have some ph test strips, maybe I’ll use one of those tonight.

if there's a bit of an off oder coming from that area then you're most likely looking at a yeast infection.... My old lab kept getting them.... Bella she does that just before heat... been lucky with her tho no sign of any yeast infection or ui problems

It's frustrating, I know. If after a heat or two she remains as recessed as she is you might ask about having an episioplasty done if you plan to spay her. I wish now that I'd done it for Ella, but I don't plan to put her under again unless I have too. Hopefully a heat or two will pop things right out for her. Or, if wiping her keeps her girly bits healthy just keep doing that. It's where I'm at with Ella. Not only do I dig through poop but I wipe my dogs girly parts. In public!

Hahah the things we do for these pups! I haven’t noticed any smell, I will check when I get home though.

Boxergirl: I think we have discussed this before, didn’t you (or someone) say that if we decide to have the episioplasty done, it should NOT be done at the same time as spaying her right? I believe my girl isn’t as recessed as your Ella. We have been doing well with her on urinary health supplements. Hopefully a heat or two will make things even better.

We did talk about this. I chose not to have it done at her spay because the clinic where she was having it done was not experienced. As it turned out, she had some complications during her spay and it would have been dangerous to keep her under to do an extra surgery anyway. She had a bleed that they couldn't stop and then her temperature fell to dangerous levels. In hindsight I was glad that I didn't choose to do it there, but I do kind of wish I'd have had it done. But her girly bits never became less recessed and she still has issues. You have time. Give it at least two heats and see what happens. And if the supplements and wiping works, then stick with it. You can always have the other surgery done later, if necessary.

Yep her urine pH is high. I used to give her D-mannose powder to prevent UTIs. I stopped giving it to her a few months ago because I thought we had it under control, I still give her “cranimals” though. Do you think I should start her back on the D-mannose? I just don’t know what to do, I don’t want to make this potential kidney problem worse. Maybe the high pH is because of the potential kidney problems or maybe it’s because she is starting a UTI? I just don’t know :( She isn’t having any other symptoms of a UTI though, that’s what’s confusing me.625F5FD0-F5E9-449A-86DA-DD7F9B8FB8C5.jpeg

Ok so I just read that there is no proof, but D-mannose may lead to kidney damage. So never mind that. I’m thinking I’ll call my vet tomorrow.

My advice is to do another check in the morning and then call your vet and see what they say. It's always worth a call. With the questions about her kidney function I would want to check giving her anything. I'm sorry, Jarena. I know you're worried.

Ok, I agree, better safe than sorry. And yes I’m worried. I’ve been trying not to think about it too much but today since I saw the discharge.... it’s been a bad day. Thank you, I always look forward to your replies.

I wish I could do more than give moral support and anecdotal info. I use d-mannose for myself and my daughter uses it too. The younger one that has shown complications from her type 1 diabetes much too early. One of those complications involves her kidneys. Her endo felt it was safe for her to use. I hope that hasn't changed.

Your moral support means a lot.

I think it probably is super safe. I just don’t want to chance it without knowing if there is something wrong.

And in the last 10-15 minutes Lettie has licked her self about 4 times. So maybe she is showing UTI symptoms after all. I would be thrilled to find out she has a UTI if it meant no kidney problems lol.

And all this worrying could be nothing.... discharge and extra cleaning could be signs of her going into heat. I’m driving myself crazy!

I wouldn't chance it either. Can you get her in sooner for this issue and then convince them to do the tests early? Might be worth asking.
