Glucosamine

If you give your dogs glucosamine, at what age did you start doing so? Is there a certain age you should start? Moose has been growing very slow and steady, but since he's turning one in a few days it's something I have started thinking more about.

Ruby's been on a feed with glucosamine added since she was about 6 months old. She's been on MSM too. She's now 23 months old. Ruby is a bullmastiff.

Thanks Ruby! A friend gave me a whole bottle of glucosamine tablets since she no longer needs them. I think I'll go ahead and start using them.

My puppy has been on glucosamine since he got here at nine weeks. My breeder strongly recommended it and my vet agreed that it was a good idea. Their joints can use the support during all that crazy growing. My pup went from 20 to 80 pounds in three months!

MONSTER! :eek4:

I know! So much for raw fed puppies grow nice and slow. :/ As of Sunday he was (a lean) 78.4lbs @ just over 5 months of age.

Rene, I also use Halo's xtra-C, vitamin E, and fish oil. My pup comes to work with me at a veterinary clinic and is exposed to bugs daily so I do a lot of immune system support. His skin is also on the sensitive side. I would tailor supplementation to suit your individual puppy's needs.

On the dogs that we don't feed raw they get glucosamine with Chondrotin and MSM and Ester C since birth as mama got given it every day too.

Thanks everyone! All the input has been very helpful. We gave him chews with glucosamine when he was younger but those contained wheat. When he lost all of his hair due to his wheat allergy we pulled him off of pretty much everything. I've started giving him glucosamine, msm and chondroitin now. It's about time we got back on the right track. :)

I was just about to post a thread asking about supplements! I love this forum....most of my questions are already answered for me :D! Jagger's vet is a little clueless about this sort of thing and thinks that there is to much "mumbo jumbo" about dogs on the internet bahahaha...Just give us shots weigh us and I'll check the forum LOL!!

There are little to no glucosamine side effects, so it's perfectly fine to start now.

Give your pup a LIQUID glucosamine supplement. I've read studies in which only 10-15% of the glucosamine from pills is absorbed into the body. With liquid glucosamine, 80-85% is absorbed into the body. I can vouch for this from experience, with me and my dog. We've taken several different brands and types. Within just a few weeks, Jack (my dog) and I were both doing activities that we haven't done in years. Start now so your pup doesn't have to suffer down the road. :)

My dog and I use a liquid glucosamine brand that's gluten-free (yes, we use the same thing!!).

What brands do you guys use? I've heard to go to a pet store or even the supermarket but then I worry about dosage. I have a vet appt next week but I love the advice given on here via personal experience. Thanks!!

With my senior GSD I used Cosequin DS and had great results. For my Bullmastiff puppy I got several recommendations to use something with Perna Canaliculus, so I have him on SynoviG3.

INTRODUCTION
K9 Natu-Joint was formulated to maintain and support joint function, mobility and health. Using a combination of ingredients proven to play an important role in joint health, K9 Natu-Joint brings together in one product, a host of benefits typically found in multiple products.

K9 Natu-Joint is an all-natural product that uses only pharmaceutical-quality ingredients. In an industry filled with so-called joint products, it is vitally important to choose a company whose ingredients you can trust. With more than 30 years of experience in advancing animal health, TechMix has built a reputation with products you can trust. In addition, our unique liquid formula allows you to offer it to your dog with food, in water or as a treat. This makes it possible to give it to even the most finicky dog.
CANINE JOINT HEALTH
Every movement and activity your dog performs is possible due to the wonders and dynamics of the body’s joints. These joints are a combination of bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and joint fluid. The cartilage surface, and lubricating fluid in these joints, are the meeting points for this process, and if they are not maintained at an optimum level, the cascade of events that are set in motion can be devastating and can range from temporary pain and discomfort to a lifelong battle with arthritis that could eventually lead to immobility and, for some pets, an unacceptable quality of life.

KEY INGREDIENTS
The key to maintaining healthy joints is to provide your dog with the building blocks and components of the joints. K9 Natu-Joint contains a specially designed matrix of ingredients to address this issue from many angles.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) – An exciting, newer component in the battle for healthy joints, HA is an important component of the thick liquid in the joint called synovial fluid. It plays a number of roles in the joint, such as acting as a buffer zone, providing support, hydration and nutrition, as well as playing an important role in inflammation.
Glucosamine – Our highly-purified source helps in maintaining healthy joints, as well as works to repair and renew damaged joints. Glucosamine is a precursor for glycosaminoglycans, which are major components of cartilage, the tissue in joints between the bones. In addition it has an anti-inflammatory effect, which may help in controlling joint pain and inflammation.
Chondroitin – A naturally occurring molecule in the body much like glucosamine, it is an important component of cartilage and also has anti-inflammatory effects.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) – An important source of sulfur, it helps in reducing inflammation occurring in the joints and muscles.
Bromelain –An extract from the pineapple plant, bromelain has been shown to block the inflammatory process.
Ascorbic Acid – Also known more commonly as Vitamin C, ascorbic acid is a very potent antioxidant. The body is constantly in a cycle of damage and repair from day-to-day living. Antioxidants, such as ascorbic acid, serve as a “clean-up crew” to help prevent and repair this damage.

LIQUID FORM FOR INCREASED ABSORPTION
According to the Physician’s Desk Reference, “only 10-20% of vitamins and minerals in any pill form are absorbed by the human body.” In addition, for components like Hyaluronic Acid, the most effective form of the product is in a liquid. Combine these facts with the ease of administration and highly-palatable taste, and you have a joint supplement your dog will use and benefit from in one convenient form.
