Food Recomendations

My 6 month old Cane Coro Nicodemus has been having some diarrhea issues, had two episodes. I have him on Merricks Raw High Protein food, no grain. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this food, or if it's too rich for my pup. The vet didn't find anything in his stool sample which leads me to believe it could be allergy related. I noticed he had the sniffles today. His stool when I first transitioned him to the Merricks was soft then became hard after a week or so. It's currently soft now, not diarrhea, but I am concerned once he is off the stomach antibiotics it's going to become bad again.

Does the food you're giving him contain ANY chicken in it? I cannot give my Corsos anything with chicken. They will get super dry and itchy skin and super soft stool (almost diarrhea). They don't even get treats with chicken in it. Make sure you are reading the ingredients. Even though it doesn't contain the word "chicken" in the name of the flavor, doesn't mean that it's free of chicken.

Also watch out for anything labelled poultry or animal fat as those can also be chicken.

I had almost the exact same experience. I had my girl on the same food (not labeled chicken, but it was the first ingredient). And had the same problems you're describing. I ended up doing lots of research on this forum and elsewhere on what was best for a growing large breed pup. So I switched to a grain free, poultry free, all life stages dog food. Also, like the other two said, I now read the ingredients of even treats since not everything that contains chicken labeled as such. Good luck!

In addition to what others have said, check the amount that you're feeding. Sometimes cutting back on portion size can help with stool consistency. Make sure you aren't feeding too much.

Yes, I was surprised to see how many foods had "chicken meal" or "chicken fat" as and ingredient that isn't chicken flavored! My dogs get grain free & chicken/poultry free food. I usually do something with salmon because it's good for their coat and they love the fishy taste!

Why is he on antibiotics?

I would add in a good daily probiotic - opposite in the day from the antibiotic.
I also like a product called "GI Support" from OnlyNaturalPets, it works great when we have loose poops or other "upsets". It has some probiotics (but I would add more in your case), and also some herbs which help soothe the GI tract.

I'm having the same issue with my almost seven month old Cane, Literally just started having diarrhea mess last week, i've been trying not to fast her, because of it, its explosive almost... I thought it was grains but now reading this i'm going to do more research i have this feeling its the chicken or poultry too.. I've never had this breed before only ever had shepherds or rottweilers, this breed is so finicky!

Same here, I switched to Victor professional and stool is hard all the time now and they love the food. Big bags 40 pounds delivered from Chewy and high rated.

This all great information I was having an issue with anyhing labeled turkey. Soft stool lots of urinating so I stop giving him the turkey but never thought to stay away from chicken and he has been very dry now that he is a year old it is very cold where we live right now but he has been trying to scratch his bell when I rolled him over it just appears slightly irritated but really dry. I will have to see if there is poultry in the grain free that I'm currently feeding him. His stool is normally solided but not consistent. Thanks again
