Food problems

I brought the Caster and Pollux last night he LOVED it. Mixed with his old food, stools were normal. Now I hope I can get some weight so I don't feel embarrassed about taking him out. Like my danes to be light but he's pushing it for him.

That is great!!! Glad he likes the food. It sucks when they are not eating well. Sadie has started not being interested in breakfast, but she eats her dinner like there is no tomorrow.

Sadies Mom just wanted to say THANK YOU Stone looks SO much better. Instead of being on the verge of anorexia he's starting to look like a gangly puppy. Plus he loves the food, not as much as what I'm giving Thor but at least he has more interests in it.

I had to switch him again :(, hopefully for the last time, now he's on the precise holistic. He has good days and bad days, can't keep up with the growth spurts.

I know it's frustrating to have a picky dog. Especially when you are feeding a good quality food.

Just some observations I've made over the years: Some of the better dog foods, even though they are healthier, are less appetizing to dogs. They just don't smell or taste as good as the cheaper foods. Why? I believe it is the fat content. Fat makes food taste better. The cheap dog food brands use lower quality ingredients but they have done extensive studies into what dogs LIKE. So they spray tantalizing fats onto the food after it is pressed into nuggets.

What makes me believe this? Take a piece of kibble that your dog LIKES to eat and rub it between your fingers or a paper towel. You will feel the grease. Then try the same thing with the dog food that your dog refuses to eat.

You mentioned that your dog will eat the food if you pour bacon grease on it (bad? maybe). Fatty acids are a small but essential part of a dog's diet. Especially for weight gain, coat, and muscle growth.

Either you will have to find a food that Stone likes, or fiqure out a way to make his current food more appetizing.

We make a homemade 'wet' dog food that we add to their dry kibble. You could also make a gravy. We make our food from ground deer meat, brown rice, eggs, celery & carrots which are pureed with beef broth. The carrots color the food orange (lol). We have also substituted potatoes & sweet potatoes instead of the rice.

Actually Stone is not really all that picky compared to my other boy, LOL. However for some reason he just did not like this "Primative Natural" food, looking back I can see why. The "Caster and Pollux" he devours, the "Precise Holistic" ( what he's on now) he INHALES. He looks better coat, his pasterns are starting to rise, stools are good, and his teeth are clearing up.

As far as I know I'm the only one here with a German Mastiff ( Great Dane) puppy. Finding a decent food just right for them is a PITA.......So I went to a site specialized in dane nutrition and found something that would work. The new food is exceeding my expectations and I noticed some changes in Stone structure wise. Therefore as of now I will continue feeding this until he has matured ( about 1) then I will switch him to the raw, like my other boy.

Oh he's been on the Precise Holistic for about two weeks now. Will keep everyone updated on his progress after a month.
